Abstract

Irrational self-medication, including the misuse of antibiotics and corticosteroids, is a serious health problem among adolescents that may lead to antimicrobial resistance, adverse effects, and delayed diagnosis. A Community Service Program (PKM) titled “Stop Self-Medication Sembarangan: Bijak Menggunakan Obat Sejak Remaja” was carried out by pharmacy professional students of Deli Husada Health Institute on May 23, 2026, at SMA ISTIQLAL Deli Tua. The program aimed to improve health literacy among Grade 11 students regarding rational drug use, the risks of unprescribed antibiotic and corticosteroid use, and the role of pharmacists. An interactive school-based counseling method was used with leaflets, brochures, and educational videos, accompanied by pre-test and post-test evaluations. The activity was attended by 70 students with high enthusiasm. Evaluation results showed a significant improvement in knowledge, from an average pre-test score of 30% to a post-test score of 90%. A total of 10 questions were raised during the discussion session, with a 100% participation rate. In conclusion, school-based health education is effective in improving adolescent health literacy, and pharmacists play a key role as agents of change in fostering rational medication behavior among youth.
