Abstract

The Rungkut library is one of two Public Libraries available in Surabaya City. This building is supposed to be the main building of the Surabaya City Public Library, however, plenty of design, aesthetics, and facility problems instantly ruins that image. This needs to be fixed with a thorough redesign process. The library is redesigned through an analysis process, experimentation towards design schematics, and application of a new concept called “The Common Learner.” This new concept focuses itself on three different things that are currently the main value of modern libraries, which is keeping productivity afloat, making people more enthusiastic inside the library, and adding comfort value for all visitors. This concept is used in the new design, and also adding new facilities the library needs, such as a computer area, self-service circulation machine, and multimedia collection with e-books.Through the redesign results, there are hopes that the citizen of Surabaya City can go back to visiting the Surabaya City Public Library building, and in turn, the library could fulfill the citizens’ needs while also making the citizens develop reading habits.

Abstract

The degradation of environmental conditions and human health nowadays are getting worse, because of an instant lifestyle that leads people to keep using dangerous chemicals and not eco-friendly products. Therefore, organic products become the beneficial solution to enhance both people’s quality of life as well as the environment. People’s awareness towards a healthy and eco-friendlier lifestyle have also been increasing lately, but unfortunately this is not followed with the accessible source of information and organic products. Based on these phenomena, an educative recreational facility is needed to provide education in a fun way, as well as to introduce the variants and benefits of organic products in the market through multisensory experiences. Thus, designer initiated the Organic Living Center in Semarang, where education and information will be delivered through various interactive hands-on activities. The design method stages are: Observe, Define, Ideate, Evaluate, Prototype, Test & Implementation. The design concept called ‘Reversion’ applied by mimicking the characteristics of nature and also focusing on the connection with nature as the implementation of biophilic concept. Moreover, this project aims to generate positive impacts not only for people as consumer, but also support the local producers as a community, and the environment for the sustainability of life in the future.

Nowadays lifestyle rapidly increases especially in the fashion industry. This makes many entrepreneurs start their business in retail fashion industry. The high competition demands entrepreneurs should have strategies in order to attract consumers' interest, one of the ways is by redesigning their window display areas. Therefore, a system is needed to be applied in window display area design with the emphasis on practicality in assembling. To achive this, the design requires observation, literature study and trials. As the base of the working process, this design applies the David Kelley’s design thinking method which done through numerous phases such as empathise phase (early phase), define (determining phase), ideate (ideation phase), prototype (trial and error) and test (the application). This design has 4 choice of categorized sets which are bag’s category, footwear’s category, clothing’s category and mix category. The applied system of this product is a modular system that has ease of assemble for the users. This design has the advantages which are the various different forms that can be created from modules in each category, as well as the budget cost which is affordable for fashion store entrepreneurs.

Abstract

Apart from a routine and systematic lectures in an university, it turns out that various students activities are a supportive activities of the main activities, which is the lectures itself. This activity is a spontaneous activity in a short period of time but done as routines in an everyday life, both by an individual or groups (social) such as; relaxing sit/resting while waiting for the lectures time, chatting with friends, eating and drinking, and so on. This design aim to create an area (space) that can facilitate those activities specifically and optimally. The designer desires to utilize the space of shipping container material is based on the reality that the accumulation of shipping containers in the harbor is increasing due to the cheaper budget in the making of a new one than reusing the old ones.                This design applies the design thinking methods that started from a data collection, programming, then initiation method and design visualization that ended with the realization phase and design evaluation. The finding results in 3 student social space designs from a functional shift of shipping container material in Petra Christian University Surabaya.
