Abstract

Living Qur’an scholarship has documented diverse forms of Qur’anic reception, yet has given limited attention to how meanings inherited from the tafsīr tradition are preserved and recontextualized within contemporary religious communities. Addressing this gap, this study examines the reception of Q.S. Fāṭir [35]:29–30 among Qur’anic teachers at Pesantren Nurul Falah, Surabaya. Employing a Living Qur’an approach, the research draws on in-depth interviews, participant observation, and engagement with classical and contemporary exegetical literature. The findings show that the teachers preserve the verse’s core exegetical meanings while reconfiguring them within contemporary Qur’anic education. Exegetical reception actualizes tilāwah, iqāmat al-ṣalāh, infāq, and tijārah lan tabūr as an integrated paradigm of devotion and teaching; aesthetic reception cultivates reverence, tartīl, and Qur’anic sensibility; and functional reception translates these meanings into practices of daʿwah, educational service, communal care, spiritual formation, and Ahl al-Qur’an identity. Rather than generating new textual meanings, the reception of the verse rearticulates the ethical horizon of āyat al-qurrā’ through the figure of the mu‘allim al-Qur’an, shifting the practical realization of Qur’anic piety from recitation to pedagogical responsibility. The study argues that transformation occurs primarily through religious subject formation, as inherited exegetical meanings are internalized and translated into social action within contemporary Qur’anic education.
