Abstract

The study in this approach uses the study of semantic theory in the methodology of Hadith science, semantics is to analyze the relationships of signs with objects which are the container for the application of these signs. Thus, semantics can be interpreted as the science of meaning or about the meaning of language. This theory was introduced by Charles Morris and Rudolf Carnap. The language used by the Prophet. in its expression about "inna abi wa abaka fi an-nar" (actually my father and father are in hell fire), "father" in this expression is not the true meaning.

Abstract

This study examines the biography and exegetical thought of Muhammad Husain ath-Thabathaba’i, with a particular focus on the conception of Hadith in his Tafsir al-Mizan. He was born into a scholarly family deeply rooted in intellectual and spiritual traditions, which shaped his intellectual character from an early age. His formal and religious education began in Tabriz and continued in Najaf, a major center of Islamic learning, where he studied various disciplines such as jurisprudence (fiqh), principles of jurisprudence (usul), philosophy, and mysticism (irfan). His intellectual development was also influenced by the socio-political conditions of Iran during the Pahlavi era, marked by processes of secularization. His major work, Tafsir al-Mizan, employs the method of interpreting the Qur’an through the Qur’an (tafsir al-Qur’an bi al-Qur’an), combined with rational, analytical, and comparative approaches. Within this framework, Hadith is not treated as a primary source, but rather as a supporting tool in understanding Qur’anic verses. Ath-Thabathaba’i adopts a selective approach, accepting mutawatir Hadith while exercising caution toward solitary (zhanni) reports. He also demonstrates a moderate stance by engaging with both Sunni and Shi‘i sources. In his perspective, Hadith includes narrations from the Prophet as well as the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt. The use of Hadith in his exegesis serves to reinforce the meanings derived from the Qur’an, particularly in themes such as imamate, intercession, and ulil amr. Thus, the conception of Hadith in Tafsir al-Mizan is integrative, critical, and remains subordinate to the authority of the Qur’an. Although ath-Thabathaba’i belongs to the Twelver Shi‘i tradition, his moderate engagement with Sunni sources in constructing his Hadith conception indicates that he cannot be characterized as excessive (ghuluw).

Abstract

The isyārī approach has predominantly been studied within the context of Qur’anic exegesis, while its application in understanding Hadith (fiqh al-ḥadīth) has received relatively limited attention, particularly regarding the validity of Sufi interpretations through sanad criticism, matn analysis, and measurable epistemological parameters. This study aims to analyze the application of the isyārī approach in Hadith interpretation among Sufi figures and to examine its validity based on the parameters established by al-Shāṭibī. This research employs a qualitative library research method. The data were analyzed using content analysis combined with sanad and matn criticism of Hadith, and further examined according to the two parameters of accepting isyārī interpretation proposed by al-Shāṭibī. The primary sources of this study include Sufi works such as Risālat al-Mustarsyidīn, Ḥālat Ahl al-Ḥaqīqah ma‘a Allāh, and Jawāhir al-Ma‘ānī. The findings reveal that the Hadiths employed in isyārī interpretation are generally classified as maqbūl, with ḥasan and ṣaḥīḥ quality, except for one Hadith considered weak. Symbolic interpretations are found in several terms, such as jasad and iṣba‘, while other terms remain consistent with their linguistic meanings and Islamic legal usage. This study demonstrates that the isyārī approach in Hadith interpretation can be accepted as long as it does not contradict Hadith authenticity, linguistic principles, and does not generate new legal rulings.
