Abstract

Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) serve as work guidelines to ensure the quality and consistency of laboratory services. Laboratory personnel compliance with SOPs is essential to minimize errors in the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical stages that may affect the quality of examination results. This study aimed to analyze laboratory staff compliance with SOP  and its relationship with the quality of laboratory examination results at Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam. This research used a quantitative approach with an analytical cross-sectional design. The population consisted of all laboratory personnel at Grandmed Hospital Lubuk Pakam, totaling 30 people, selected using total sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and observation, then analyzed using descriptive analysis and the Chi-Square test. The results showed that the level of laboratory personnel compliance with SOPs was in the high category. The Chi-Square test indicated that examination result quality, individual factors, and organizational factors had a significant relationship with SOP compliance (p < 0.05), while environmental factors showed no significant relationship (p > 0.05). In conclusion, compliance with SOPs plays an important role in maintaining the quality of laboratory examination results. Therefore, regular supervision, periodic SOP training, and continuous evaluation are needed to improve the quality of laboratory services

Abstract

Introduction: Humans use water to fulfill various daily needs. Each individual's water needs vary from one location to another and at each level of demand. The higher the standard of living in a place, the greater the need for water. Objective:  This study aims to examine the quality of water in several depots in Tanjung Morawa District. Method: The method used in this study is a gravimetric method in which the parameters measured determine the quality of water, namely TDS (Total Dissolved Solid) and TSS (Total Suspended Solid). Then measure the pH using a universal pH indicator, litmus paper and a pH meter. As well as the measurement of taste and turbidity. Result: The results of this study indicated that 8 out of 9 samples of TDS levels had levels higher than the maximum 2010 PERMENKES quality standard, namely 500 mg/L. TSS (Total Suspend Solid) is still lower when compared to the maximum standard content of refill drinking water stipulated by SNI (Indonesian National Standard) for clean water, which is 50 mg/L. The pH level is within normal limits, there is a sweet taste in drinking water and at turbidity levels clear drinking water has particles and is clear without particles.

Abstract

Background: Peripheral Blood Smear (PBS) examination is a crucial hematology test for evaluating blood cell morphology, particularly that of erythrocytes. The quality of the results is heavily influenced by pre-analytical stages, one of which is the fixation process. Variations in fixation time can affect erythrocyte morphology and staining outcomes; therefore, a proper understanding of the correct procedure is essential. This outreach activity aimed to enhance participants' knowledge and understanding regarding the impact of varying PBS fixation times on erythrocyte morphology when using Giemsa staining. The activity began with a preparation phase involving coordination between the organizing team and the institution regarding the schedule, venue, provision of equipment and materials, and the development of educational content. The implementation phase commenced with participant registration and the opening of the event by the moderator. Following the presentation of the material, a laboratory demonstration was conducted. The organizing team showcased PBS preparations created using methanol fixation times of 1, 3, 5, and 10 minutes. The results indicated that the participants' average knowledge level rose from 59.3% prior to the activity to 95.0% afterward, representing an average increase of 35.7%. The most significant improvement was observed in the understanding of how fixation time variations affect erythrocyte morphology, rising from 47% to 92% (a 45% increase). Appropriate fixation times yielded clearer erythrocyte images, intact cell shapes, and even color distribution, whereas fixation times that were too short or too long compromised the quality of the preparations. This activity successfully broadened participants' insight into the importance of standardizing the fixation process in hematology testing to ensure accurate results that support rapid and precise diagnoses.
