Abstract

The infant mortality rate caused by complications of premature birth is still a serious health challenge in the Medan Tuntungan area. Cultural factors and a lack of understanding of the danger signs of premature babies often lead to delays in medical treatment. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of mothers and families in the care of premature babies and early detection of high risk mothers and children through the local wisdom approach of Karo Culture. The program was held on November 15, 2024 with interactive counseling methods, premature baby care demonstrations, and group discussions. The results of the evaluation showed a significant increase in participants' understanding of safe premature infant care procedures and the importance of early detection. Culture-based approaches have proven to be effective in minimizing communication barriers between medical personnel and the community, thereby increasing family trust and awareness in following modern medical standards.

Abstract

Preeclampsia is one of the leading causes of maternal death characterized by increased blood pressure and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation, which if not treated appropriately can lead to fatal complications for both mother and fetus. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of pregnant women and their families about the warning signs of preeclampsia and the importance of early detection. The activity was carried out at the Hana Kasih Clinic on May 23, 2024 by an academic team from STIKes Darmo Medan. The method used is structured educational counseling, which is evaluated using a quantitative design through pre-test and post-test to measure the improvement of participants' understanding. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in pregnant women's understanding of the early symptoms of preeclampsia, the importance of routine blood pressure checks, and quick steps to be taken in emergency situations. In conclusion, structured education about the warning signs of preeclampsia is an effective preventive and promotive strategy to empower pregnant women, increase independence in pregnancy risk management, and support efforts to reduce maternal pain and mortality in the work area of Hana Kasih Clinic.

Abstract

The postpartum period is a critical phase that requires special attention, especially in preventing postpartum bleeding due to uterine atonia. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and practical skills of health cadres and families in performing simple massage techniques (massage) on the uterus after the baby is born to help uterine contractions. The implementation method includes counseling and demonstration of direct uterine massage techniques. The success of the activity was evaluated through pre-test and post-test as well as observation of participants' practical abilities. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' understanding and skills in taking independent actions as a first aid effort to prevent the risk of postpartum bleeding. Structured education on this technique is expected to create a family environment that is alert and independent in supporting postpartum maternal safety.

Abstract

The Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) is still the main indicator of the success of health development in Indonesia. One of the main challenges is the delay in early detection of pregnancy complications that are exacerbated by inaccuracies in traditional perceptions or myths in society. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge, awareness, and independence of pregnant women in conducting early detection of high risk of pregnancy through the "Healthy Tradition" approach. This program is carried out at the Sally Clinic by involving pregnant women in the first, second, and third trimesters and families as moral supports. The method of activities is carried out through interactive counseling that integrates medical education with positive local cultural values. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in participants' understanding of pregnancy hazards and the importance of routine checkups. Through this approach, the stigma that medical science contradicts tradition can be minimized, so that pregnant women are more confident in maintaining the health of their fetus according to medical standards without abandoning their cultural identity.
