Abstract

Climate change has become one of the greatest threats to the sustainability of natural resources in many regions around the world, including Gaza. Situated in the arid Middle East, Gaza faces critical water scarcity, worsened by climate change through extreme weather, reduced rainfall, rising temperatures, and infrastructure damage from conflict. This article examines the impact of climate change on Gaza's water crisis and explores how nanoparticle technology could offer an innovative solution to improve water quality and sustainability. By reviewing studies and case examples, it highlights the potential of nanoparticles in water filtration and purification, as well as the challenges of implementing this technology in Gaza. In addition, this study also presents economic solutions and integrated strategies in the context of the water resources crisis in Gaza.

Abstract

The oil and gas industry has long been a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, with flaring and methane emissions from production processes being major concerns. However, in recent years, there has been increasing pressure from governments, environmental organizations, and stakeholders to reduce or eliminate flaring, while capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. This article reviews recent technological advancements, strategies, and efforts undertaken by global oil and gas companies to achieve zero flaring and implement effective carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions. Despite progress, challenges related to scale, cost, and infrastructure development remain significant barriers to the large-scale implementation of these technologies. This review highlights key case studies, technological innovations, and policy frameworks driving these efforts, while offering a future perspective on achieving a carbon-neutral oil and gas sector from an economic viewpoint.

Abstract

The accelerating threats of climate change and environmental degradation require industries to adopt holistic and integrated solutions that go beyond conventional pollution control. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the integration between carbon credit systems and industrial wastewater management, viewed through the lens of chemical engineering and process optimization. It emphasizes how the synergistic deployment of carbon reduction technologies and wastewater treatment innovations can support global climate and water sustainability targets, particularly Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 13 (Climate Action). By exploring both technological and policy frameworks—including the Paris Agreement, national emission regulations, and voluntary market mechanisms such as the Gold Standard and Verified Carbon Standard—this study outlines pathways for industries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously improving water quality, recovering energy and nutrients, and enhancing economic returns through circular resource use. The paper also identifies key challenges in implementation, including verification complexity, regulatory gaps, and financial constraints, and proposes innovations such as modular bioelectrochemical systems, microalgae-based treatment for CO₂ fixation, and blockchain-enabled carbon credit verification. In doing so, it aims to provide a roadmap for climate-resilient and environmentally sound industrial transformation grounded in chemical engineering principles.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of mass and energy balances in the liquid soap manufacturing process with the objective of enhancing process efficiency and promoting cleaner production principles in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Leveraging data compiled from over 60 international journal publications and validated through process simulation software (Aspen Plus®), the research systematically quantifies the flow of materials and energy within each stage of the production process. The investigation identifies critical inefficiencies such as excessive energy consumption in drying and waste sludge generation. Through scenario analyses including feedstock substitution with waste cooking oil and heat integration techniques, the study demonstrates potential reductions in raw material costs by up to 18%, energy consumption by 10%, and greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 28%. These findings underscore the significant role of integrated mass and energy management strategies in steering traditional manufacturing towards sustainable, economically viable, and environmentally responsible operations.

Abstract

Aspen HYSYS has become a foundational tool in process engineering, offering robust capabilities for modeling, simulating, and optimizing complex industrial processes. This review explores the application of Aspen HYSYS across diverse industries—including energy generation, petrochemicals, renewable fuels, and waste heat recovery—with a specific focus on heat and mass balance calculations. Through several validated case studies, we illustrate how HYSYS enables engineers to evaluate thermal efficiency, optimize mass flows, and reduce environmental impacts. The study includes detailed performance data for shell-and-tube heat exchangers, reactive distillation systems, organic Rankine cycles, and dehydration processes. Each simulation case is contextualized in terms of energy conservation and sustainable process design, demonstrating direct contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Moreover, the review elaborates on numerical techniques and thermodynamic models used in HYSYS, offering guidance on choosing appropriate property packages and convergence settings. Challenges in fouling, turndown operation, and reference-state discrepancies in enthalpy tracking are also discussed. Ultimately, this article underscores the potential of process simulation not only as a tool for design and analysis but also as a driver of innovation and sustainability in industrial operations.
