Abstract

The growth in the number of vehicles in Serang City, which reached more than 450,000 units in 2022, has placed considerable pressure on unsignalized intersections, particularly in residential areas with limited roadway space. This condition leads to vehicle delays, reduced movement efficiency, and an increased potential for traffic conflicts at the Jl. Mayor Muslich – Jl. Empat Lima intersection. These problems may potentially result in long-term consequences such as rising economic costs due to travel delays, air pollution from vehicle emissions trapped in congestion, and a higher risk of traffic accidents. This study employs the Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual (PKJI) 2023 method to evaluate intersection performance, analyzing parameters such as capacity, degree of saturation (DS), vehicle delay, and level of service (LOS). The results show that a limited widening of 50–100 cm on the intersection approaches increased capacity from 3,525 to 3,823 pcu/hour, reduced the degree of saturation (DS) from 0.80 to 0.74, and lowered vehicle delay from 13.81 to 12.93 seconds. This significant improvement occurs because the widening enables a more balanced flow distribution and reduces turning movement conflicts, particularly for left and right turns. This study contributes by demonstrating that even small-scale interventions can produce tangible improvements in intersection performance, thereby providing a reference for local governments to implement phased traffic management strategies that adapt to the constraints of urban space.

Abstract

This study aims to collect factors causing traffic accidents and identify accident-prone locations (black spots) on the Labuan–Pandeglang Highway section KM 18-27. The study is limited to traffic accident data for the period 2020–2024 obtained from the local police, as well as the results of field surveys related to road geometric conditions and safety facilities. The analysis methods used are the Equivalent Accident Number (EAN), Upper Control Limit (BKA), and Upper Control Limit (UCL). The results show that there are three black spot segments, namely KM 18, KM 19, and KM 22, with EAN values ??exceeding the BKA (235) and UCL limits. The dominant factors causing accidents include lack of street lighting, dangerous geometric conditions (sharp bends and steep descents), driver non-compliance with traffic signs, unroadworthy vehicle conditions, and overloading. By enriching the literature analysis on black spots on national roads and strengthening the application of the EAN–BKA–UCL method in Indonesia, this study makes a scientific contribution. In addition, these findings are expected to be used as a basis for developing policies aimed at improving traffic safety through public education initiatives, law enforcement, and infrastructure improvements.

Abstract

Road safety is an essential aspect of transportation infrastructure planning and management, especially considering the high rate of traffic accidents in Indonesia. The Tambak–Cibugang Road, KM 71–81, located in Serang Regency, Banten, is a strategic route that has shown a high accident rate in recent years. This study aims to identify accident-prone areas, analyze their causal factors, and provide technical recommendations to improve driver safety. The method employed is a descriptive-quantitative approach, involving primary and secondary data collection, calculation of the Equivalent Accident Number (EAN), blackspot identification using the Blackspot Identification (BKA) method, and prioritization of locations through the Upper Control Limit (UCL). Accident data were obtained from relevant agencies for the period 2020–2024, covering the number of incidents, fatalities, serious injuries, minor injuries, and material losses. The analysis results indicate that KM 78 and 81 are identified as locations, with values of 462 and 435, respectively, as these exceed the BKA value of 325. Contributing factors to accidents include poor road geometry, limited traffic signs, insufficient road lighting, and pavement damage such as cracks, potholes, and uneven surfaces. Technical recommendations for improvements include road geometry adjustments, additional traffic signage, enhanced road lighting, and pavement rehabilitation. The implementation of these recommendations is expected to significantly reduce accident rates and improve safety for road users.
