Abstract

The Family Planning (FP) Program is a strategic effort to control the number and spacing of births to improve the quality of family life and reduce maternal mortality. According to Sister Callista Roy, humans are adaptive systems capable of responding to internal and external stimuli through coping and adaptation processes. In using contraception, fertile couples require physiological, psychological, and social adaptation skills to be able to maintain successful contraceptive use. This study aims to analyze the relationship between coping mechanisms, regulator subsystems, cognator subsystems, and Spousal Dyadic Adaptation (SDA) based on the results of previous research. The research method used a Literature Review by examining 20 national and international journals from 2021–2025 obtained through Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. The keywords used were "dyadic coping", "Roy Adaptation Model", "contraceptive use", "spousal dyadic adaptation", and "coping mechanism". The results of the literature review showed that adaptive coping mechanisms, partner support, dyadic communication, good regulator subsystems, and positive cognator subsystems were related to successful contraceptive use and increased SDA. Various studies have shown that dyadic coping plays a role in improving mental health, relationship satisfaction, and couples' ability to cope with stress during contraceptive use. Furthermore, negative perceptions of contraceptive side effects are known to influence continued contraceptive use. Husband's support has also been shown to significantly correlate with comfort and success in contraceptive use among couples of childbearing age. The conclusion of this study indicates that successful contraceptive use is influenced by the couple's biopsychosocial adaptation abilities, based on the Roy Adaptation Model and the concept of Spousal Dyadic Adaptation.
