Abstract

This study departs from the fact that the Qur’an not only conveys theological and legal teachings, but also demonstrates rhetorical beauty through various linguistic styles, particularly ījāz (concise expression) and iṭnāb (elaborative expression). The different use of these two styles in verses with similar themes indicates a contextual and meaningful linguistic strategy. This research aims to analyze the forms, rhetorical functions, and wisdom behind the use of ījāz and iṭnāb in verses sharing thematic similarities, especially in QS. Al-Baqarah verses 120 and 145, as well as QS. Ar-Ra‘d verse 37. This study employs a qualitative method based on library research with a descriptive-analytical approach. The primary data consist of the selected Qur’anic verses, while the secondary data are obtained from classical tafsir works and balāghah literature. The analysis is conducted through the perspective of ‘ilm al-ma‘ānī by considering aspects of context (siyāq) and communicative situation (maqām). The findings reveal that ījāz and iṭnāb are employed proportionally according to contextual demands. QS. Ar-Ra‘d verse 37 tends to employ ījāz due to its concise context, whereas QS. Al-Baqarah verses 120 and 145 utilize iṭnāb to reinforce emphatic meaning. The differences in diction reflect profound rhetorical precision. The implications of this study affirm that the linguistic beauty of the Qur’an is not merely aesthetic, but also functional and contextual in conveying meaning effectively.

Abstract

Kalam nahy is a form of prohibitive expression in Arabic that plays a significant role in the study of balaghah, particularly in understanding the meanings and rhetorical purposes of Qur’anic verses. This article aims to examine kalam nahy in the Qur’an from a balaghah perspective, focusing on its haqiqi and majazi meanings. This study employs a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach to classical works of balaghah and relevant Qur’anic verses. The findings reveal that kalam nahy in the Qur’an functions not only as a legal prohibition but also serves rhetorical purposes such as warning, advice, emphasis, reproach, and other expressive meanings. Therefore, understanding both haqiqi and majazi meanings of kalam nahy is essential for a more comprehensive and contextual interpretation of the Qur’an

Abstract

This article examines in depth the structure and function of uslub al-tasybih in Qur'anic interpretation using the approach of 'ilm al-balagah. Tasybih, as one form of uslub al-bayan, plays an important role in clarifying meaning, embellishing expression, and strengthening the divine message within the text of the Qur'an. This study analyzes the pillars of tasybih (musyabbah, musyabbah bih, adat al-tasybih, and wajh al-syibh) and elaborates its rhetorical functions, which are classified into six forms: bayan imkan al-musyabbah, bayan hal al-musyabbah, bayan miqdar hal al-musyabbah, taqrir hal al-musyabbah, tazyin al-musyabbah, and taqbih al-musyabbah. The study employs a library research method, drawing on classical and contemporary works of Qur'anic exegesis.

Abstract

Background: Majāz aqlī is one of the prominent rhetorical devices in the Qur’an, characterized by attributing an action to an agent other than its actual doer. When interpreted literally, this linguistic phenomenon may lead to misunderstanding and theological inaccuracies, making it necessary to examine its structural mechanisms and interpretive functions. Purpose of the Study: This study aims to analyze the structural patterns of Majāz aqlī and to examine its hermeneutical significance in Qur’anic interpretation. Methods: This research employs a qualitative library-based approach using a bayani linguistic framework. The data are derived from classical balaghah treatises, classical Qur’anic commentaries, and contemporary tafsir works. The analysis focuses on identifying patterns of attribution (isnād) and examining their implications for interpretation. Results: The study finds that Majāz aqlī in the Qur’an operates through systematic attribution to causes, places, objects, and instruments. Each structural pattern serves specific rhetorical and interpretive functions, such as emphasizing causality, highlighting outcomes, and enriching expressive meaning. Conclusions: Understanding Majāz aqlī is essential for preventing literalistic misinterpretation and theological error. This study demonstrates that Majāz aqlī functions not merely as a rhetorical ornament, but as a hermeneutical mechanism that bridges linguistic structure and theological meaning in Qur’anic interpretation.
