Abstract

Dementia is rapidly increasing in low- and middle-income settings. The prevalence of dementia in Yogyakarta reaches 20%, which is associated with various factors. Elderly people with dementia require long-term care with adequate interventions and facilities to achieve an optimal quality of life. Innovative care models for elderly people with dementia that prioritize quality of life are needed. This study aims to determine the relationship between the severity of dementia and the quality of life of the elderly as a basis for developing an innovative model. A correlational design was applied in this study with a sample of 30 elderly people living in the community using purposive sampling. MMSE was used to measure the level of dementia, and WHOQOL-BREF was used as a quality of life instrument. Spearman's rank test was used in this study. There is a significant relationship between the severity of dementia and the quality of life of elderly people in the physical domain (rₛ = 0.428; p = 0.018) and the environmental domain (rₛ = 0.440; p = 0.015). This means that the more severe the dementia, the lower the quality of life in terms of physical and environmental aspects. Interdisciplinary home visits are being developed. Complex dementia requires collaboration between health professionals through an interdisciplinary home visit model to optimize the quality of life of the elderly with dementia.
