Abstract

Tafsir Nusantara is an essential part of the development of Quranic studies in Indonesia, demonstrating Islam's ability to adapt to local culture and societal conditions. This article aims to examine the development of Tafsir Nusantara, its per iodization, prominent figures along with their works, and its contribution to Islamic thought in Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative method by analyzing various literary works related to the history and development of Quranic exegesis in the archipelago. The results of the study show that the development of Tafsir Nusantara progressed through four periods: the classical period, the middle period, the pre-modern period, and the modern period. Each period possesses its own distinct characteristics, influenced by the social, cultural, educational, and intellectual development of the society. Figures such as Abdul Rauf as-Singkili through his work Tarjuman al-Mustafid and Buya Hamka through Tafsir al-Azhar made significant contributions to building an exegesis tradition that is contextual and relevant to the needs of the Indonesian people. Furthermore, Tafsir Nusantara plays a crucial role in addressing various social-religious issues as well as strengthening Islamic thought that is moderate, inclusive, and adaptive to the changing times.

Abstract

The global mental health crisis calls for a model of psychotherapy that goes beyond the conventional biomedical paradigm in order to fully optimize human potential. This qualitative research, conducted through a literature review and comparative-hermeneutic analysis, aims to construct a common ground between the concepts of tazkiyah al-nafs (Sufism) and flourishing (positive psychology) as the foundation for a holistic mental health model. This study delves into the thought of Sufi figures (Al-Ghazali, Ibn Arabi, Al-Qusyairi) as well as the pillars of contemporary positive psychology (Seligman, Ryff, Fredrickson). The research results reveal three main findings: (1) there is a significant structural correspondence between the stages of Sufi maqamat and the dimensions of flourishing in the PERMA+ model; (2) practical concepts such as muhasabah, dzikir, and mahabbah possess empirically supported neuropsychological mechanisms that contribute to emotional regulation; (3) the integrative Tazkiyah-Flourishing (TF) Model has the potential to serve as a more effective culture-based psychotherapy framework for the Indonesian Muslim population than secular Western approaches. The main contribution of this study is the construction of an original conceptual model that positions the transcendental dimension as a core mediating variable in the attainment of psychological well-being. Through the integration of Islamic epistemology and modern science, the TF Model is expected to serve as an adaptive alternative solution, while also providing a foundation for the development of educational services and mental health support for students based on Islamic values in schools.
