Abstract

Waste is one of the environmental issues that continues to pose a significant challenge for various regions in Indonesia, including Nunukan Regency. This regency, located in North Kalimantan Province, has unique geographical and demographic characteristics, with an area of 14,493 km² and a continuously growing population. This creates significant pressure in managing the waste generated from domestic, industrial, and commercial activities. The waste problem not only impacts the environment but also public health and the sustainability of regional development. Therefore, an effective and sustainable waste management system has become an urgent need to be implemented in Nunukan Regency. This research aims to understand the actual conditions of waste management, identify the factors affecting the effectiveness of waste management, and formulate strategies to improve infrastructure and community participation in waste management. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with primary data obtained through in-depth interviews, observations, and focus group discussions, as well as secondary data from official documents. The research results show that Nunukan Regency still faces various challenges, such as limited infrastructure, low public awareness, and high volumes of plastic waste. To address this, a holistic approach involving the government, the community, and the private sector is needed, as well as the use of environmentally friendly technology and educational programs to raise public awareness. Thus, it is hoped that the waste management system in Nunukan Regency can become more effective and sustainable.

Abstract

Waste management in Tana Tidung Regency faces complex challenges due to population growth, urbanization, and infrastructure limitations. This study aims to analyze the waste management system in Tana Tidung Regency by highlighting the challenges and opportunities in achieving a sustainable environment.waste management infrastructure, such as final disposal sites (TPA) and temporary disposal sites (TPS), is still inadequate. In addition, public awareness of sorting and processing waste is also low. Other constraints include the limited fleet of waste collection vehicles and the minimal use of modern technology. Opportunity aspects such as the development of community-based waste banks, the application of waste processing technologies like biodigesters and waste-to-energy systems, as well as collaboration with the private sector through corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. The strategy to improve the waste management system, which includes community education, infrastructure investment, and the application of the reduce, reuse, recycle (3R) principle, is deemed important to support the creation of a cleaner and more sustainable environment. waste management in Tana Tidung Regency requires a holistic approach involving the government, the community, and the private sector. By addressing existing challenges and seizing opportunities, Tana Tidung Regency can improve the quality of its waste management towards sustainable development.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in diversifying fishery products through training on milkfish floss processing. Milkfish (Chanos chanos) is a fishery commodity with high economic and nutritional value and abundant production; however, its utilization in value-added processed forms remains limited. The participants of this program were ten selected students from the Institut Sains dan Teknologi Muhammadiyah Tarakan, who are expected to serve as agents for disseminating knowledge and skills in fishery product processing within the community. The activity was conducted at the Institut Sains dan Teknologi Muhammadiyah Tarakan campus using counseling, demonstration, and hands-on practice methods in milkfish floss production. The results showed an improvement in students’ understanding of the potential for milkfish product diversification, as well as enhanced skills in the floss production process, including raw material preparation, processing, and simple packaging. This training is expected to support the development of students’ entrepreneurial mindset and promote the sustainable utilization of local fishery resources
