Abstract

The Highway Laboratory carries significant occupational safety risks and environmental impacts; however, the implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) that integrate occupational safety and environmental management aspects remains suboptimal. This study aims to analyze student satisfaction levels toward integrated SOPs based on ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 as an effort to harmonize toward a green laboratory in the Highway Laboratory. This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a survey method involving 150 Civil Engineering students from the 2023 cohort who had completed the full series of laboratory practicum sessions. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire consisting of 30 statement items across six measurement dimensions and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that the overall student satisfaction level fell into the "Moderately Satisfied" category, with three dimensions obtaining the lowest scores, namely the implementation of occupational health and safety based on ISO 45001, environmental management based on ISO 14001, and the application of the green laboratory concept. These findings indicate that the existing SOPs have not adequately accommodated occupational safety, health, and environmental sustainability aspects. This study affirms the urgency of developing integrated SOPs that harmonize ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 as the foundation for realizing a safe, healthy, and sustainable green laboratory.

Abstract

Variations in asphalt penetration test results are a recurring phenomenon in highway engineering laboratory practicums, particularly when tests are conducted by students with differing levels of technical skills and procedural understanding. These variations may compromise the reliability and consistency of laboratory outcomes if not properly analyzed. This study aims to identify and analyze the factors contributing to variations in asphalt penetration test results performed by civil engineering students during highway laboratory practicums. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach using a survey method. The population consisted of 150 fifth-semester civil engineering students from the 2023 cohort at the University of Lampung, with a sample of 60 respondents selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire based on validated indicators, including compliance with standard operating procedures, time control, temperature control, instrument reading accuracy, needle positioning, and students’ practical experience. Descriptive statistical analysis was applied to evaluate the tendency and distribution of responses. The results indicate that temperature control, time consistency, and instrument reading accuracy are the dominant factors influencing test result variations. The study recommends strengthening procedural supervision, improving laboratory instruction clarity, and integrating simulation-based practicum learning to enhance students’ technical competence and reduce testing variability

Abstract

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is a fundamental aspect in creating a safe working environment, especially in high-risk laboratories such as road laboratories. Although the use of this laboratory is quite intensive for practical activities and research at the University of Lampung, to date there has been no comprehensive study on the extent to which OSH is effectively implemented. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the implementation of OSH in the Road Laboratory of the University of Lampung with reference to national regulations. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with the location at the Road Laboratory of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lampung. The research population includes students, lecturers, and laboratory staff, while the sample is determined purposively. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and analysis of SOP documents and safety reports. The data were analyzed descriptively through categorization, interpretation, and comparison with Permenaker No. 5 of 2018 and ISO 45001:2018. The results of the study indicate that although most OSH facilities, such as PPE and SOPs, are available, the level of user compliance still varies and waste management is not yet optimal. The conclusion of this study is that there is a need to increase socialization, supervision, and strengthen the OSH management system so that laboratories can function safely, effectively, and efficiently.

Abstract

The success of practical courses at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lampung, is determined not only by facilities and infrastructure but also by the role of laboratory education personnel (PLP) as learning facilitators. A gap exists regarding PLPs’ perceptions of their contribution to the smooth implementation of practical activities and the limitations of an integrated laboratory management system. This study aims to explore PLPs’ perceptions of their roles, identify challenges, and formulate recommendations to improve laboratory quality. The research employed a mixed-method approach with a descriptive design. The population consisted of all laboratory PLPs at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lampung (sample of 7 participants). Data were collected using Likert-scale questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed through descriptive quantitative and thematic approaches. The results indicate that PLPs are actively involved in preparing laboratory tools and materials, guiding student assistants, and understanding their strategic role in supporting the quality of learning. Challenges identified include limited PLP personnel, uneven workload distribution, and the lack of an integrated documentation system. The study recommends enhancing PLP training and competency development, establishing clear laboratory SOPs, implementing digital documentation systems, and balancing workload distribution to improve practical course quality and create a professional and sustainable laboratory environment.
