Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ critical thinking skills through the application of the See, Think, Wonder strategy in Indonesian language learning on fiction and nonfiction books. The research was conducted based on initial observations indicating that students’ critical thinking skills were relatively low, particularly in observing information, analyzing reading content, expressing logical opinions, and drawing conclusions. This Classroom Action Research employed a qualitative descriptive approach supported by quantitative data and was conducted in two cycles involving planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were Grade VII students of SMPN 1 Masbagik in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through observation, tests, and documentation. The findings revealed that the See, Think, Wonder strategy improved students’ critical thinking skills, as reflected in their enhanced ability to observe, question, analyze information, express logical opinions, and draw conclusions based on evidence. Students’ learning outcomes on fiction and nonfiction book materials also improved across the two cycles. The study concludes that the See, Think, Wonder strategy is effective in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills and learning outcomes in Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

Indonesia's low reading interest, with only one in 1,000 people having a reading habit, has a direct impact on students' communication skills, since literacy and communication are inherently interconnected competencies that mutually reinforce one another. This study aims to describe the role of the Literacy Thursday program in strengthening literacy and communication skills of students at SMPN 1 Masbagik. The program has been running for years, held every Thursday morning on the school field with all school members participating. Students retell the content of books they have read at home on their own. Data collection was conducted in class 7.9 from March 12 to May 14, 2026, using a descriptive qualitative approach supported by quantitative data. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and speaking assessments using a rubric. Results show the average communication score increased from 58.9 to 78.4, with students meeting the passing standard rising from 25% to 84.4%. Students's willingness to speak in front of others also grew from 8 students (25%) to 27 students (84.4%). The program proved effective in building a reading culture and developing oral communication skills.

Abstract

The implementation of differentiated instruction has become an essential strategy for accommodating students' diverse learning needs while supporting the principles of Deep Learning in the Merdeka Curriculum. This study aimed to improve the learning out-comes of seventh-grade students on fiction and non-fiction book materials through the implementation of content differentiation at SMP Negeri 1 Masbagik. The study em-ployed Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of two cycles, with each cycle in-cluding the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were 32 students of class VII.8. Data were collected through observation, learning achievement tests, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualita-tive techniques. The findings revealed a consistent improvement in students' learning outcomes after implementing differentiated content instruction. The average learning score increased from 68 in the pre-action stage to 78 in Cycle I and further improved to 88 in Cycle II. Likewise, learning mastery increased from 59% in the pre-action stage to 78% in Cycle I and reached 91% in Cycle II. The implementation of differentiated content in-struction also enhanced students' participation, confidence, collaboration, and engage-ment during the learning process. These findings indicate that content differentiation effectively accommodates students' learning readiness and creates meaningful, active, and enjoyable learning experiences aligned with the principles of Deep Learning. There-fore, differentiated content instruction can be considered an effective learning strategy for improving students' achievement in learning fiction and non-fiction texts at the junior secondary school level.
