Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of preserving local cultural values that live in society and their relevance to the life of the faith of Catholics. This research uses a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, in-depth interviews with 9 informants, namely traditional leaders, church leaders, married couples, and local communities, as well as documentation studies. The results of the study show that the traditional ro'a mu'u dance contains noble values that are passed down from generation to generation. This dance is a symbol of acceptance, unity, respect, towards the dignity of the bride and groom and family, as well as an expression of gratitude for the formation of a new family. In addition, the traditional ro'a mu'u dance reflects the values of togetherness, loyalty, responsibility, love, and harmony in family life. These values are closely related to the meaning of the Catholic Church's marriage blessing which emphasizes the bond of love between husband and wife as a life partnership based on love, loyalty, and openness to God's work. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the traditional ro'a mu'u dance is closely related to church wedding blessings because both emphasize the values of unity, loyalty, responsibility, and togetherness in building a family. This dance also serves as a form of inculturation that enriches the faith of Catholics without diminishing local cultural identity. Therefore, the traditional ro'a mu'u dance deserves to be preserved as a cultural heritage with social, cultural, and religious value.

Abstract

This study was motivated by a shift in public understanding of the *weda rewa tuke mbaru* ritual, which is often regarded as the complete validation of marriage, leading some couples to live together before receiving the Catholic Sacrament of Marriage. This study aims to examine the meaning of the *weda rewa tuke mbaru* ritual, identify the factors causing misconceptions about it, and analyze its relevance to Christian values and Catholic family life. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was employed. Data were collected through structured interviews and documentation involving 11 informants, including a priest, traditional elders, the station leader, the Basic Ecclesial Community (KUB) leader, married couples, and a catechist at St. Francis Xavier Station, Maras. The findings indicate that the *weda rewa tuke mbaru* ritual symbolizes respect for women and their families, serves as formal recognition of the relationship between the bride and groom, and functions as a social and moral bond within the Manggarai customary marriage tradition. The ritual also reflects the values of fidelity, responsibility, and togetherness, which are consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Sacrament of Marriage. However, misconceptions remain, as some people consider the ritual sufficient justification for cohabitation without receiving the sacrament. These misconceptions are influenced by limited religious understanding, modernization, and inadequate pastoral guidance. The study concludes that the ritual remains relevant when understood as a customary tradition that supports, rather than replaces, the Catholic Sacrament of Marriage.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of social communication based on the Inter Mirifica document in the lives of Catholic Youth (OMK) at the Sta. Maria of Mount Carmel Parish, Sta. Maria Assumpta Kupang. The rapid development of digital communication media has significantly influenced the faith, social relationships, and pastoral participation of Catholic youth, creating both opportunities and challenges for the Church. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation involving Catholic Youth members, the Head of OMK, the Head of KUB, and the Parish Priest. The data were analyzed through data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, play an important role in facilitating communication, disseminating information about church activities, strengthening faith formation, and fostering relationships among community members. However, excessive use of social media may expose young people to content inconsistent with Christian values, reduce direct interpersonal communication, and weaken spiritual life. Therefore, the Church should strengthen pastoral guidance, digital literacy, and responsible social communication to help Catholic youth use digital media wisely, critically, and in accordance with Christian values.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of social communication, as articulated in the Inter Mirifica document, in the lives of Catholic Youth (OMK) within the Basic Ecclesial Community (KUB) of St. Mary of Mount Carmel, St. Mary Assumpta Parish. The study is motivated by the rapid development of digital communication media, which has significantly influenced the faith, social interactions, and pastoral engagement of young Catholics. Social media serves not only as a platform for communication and entertainment but also presents opportunities and challenges for youth ministry. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving Catholic youth members, the OMK leader, the KUB coordinator, and the parish priest. Data were analyzed through data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that social communication plays a vital role in strengthening community relationships, disseminating Church-related information, fostering faith formation, and encouraging active participation in ecclesial activities through platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. However, excessive and inappropriate use of social media may also result in reduced face-to-face interaction, exposure to content inconsistent with Christian values, and declining spiritual awareness. The study concludes that the principles of Inter Mirifica remain highly relevant in guiding Catholic youth toward responsible, critical, and ethical use of digital media. Therefore, the Church should strengthen pastoral accompaniment, digital literacy education, and communication formation to support faith development and active participation in the Church's mission in the digital era.
