Abstract

This study was motivated by a sociolinguistic phenomenon in the Indonesia–Timor-Leste border area, particularly at St. John Paul II Maudemu Chapel, Belu Regency, where the incorporation of the Bunaq language into Catholic liturgy enhances the congregation’s participation and understanding. The study aimed to identify the forms, contributing factors, and functions of code-switching and code-mixing in liturgical communication. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed. Primary data were collected through direct observation of Sunday liturgical celebrations and structured in-depth interviews with eleven informants, including the parish priest, catechists, Basic Ecclesial Community leaders, community representatives, and Catholic youth members. Secondary data were obtained from books, journal articles, and Church documents. Data were analyzed through data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that code-switching between Indonesian and Bunaq occurs during the homily, liturgical announcements, and prayers of the faithful, while code-mixing appears through the use of Bunaq kinship terms and culturally significant expressions. These linguistic practices are influenced by the congregation’s limited understanding of formal Indonesian religious terminology, the priest’s pastoral communication strategies, and the need to create a more familiar liturgical atmosphere. The use of both languages strengthens comprehension of Scripture, increases spiritual engagement, and supports the preservation of Bunaq cultural identity through liturgical inculturation.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of participation among the faithful in attending daily Eucharistic celebrations at Sts. Peter and Paul Quasi-Parish Oesapa. Many members of the congregation have not yet fully understood the meaning and significance of the daily Eucharist as the source and summit of Christian life. This study aims to examine the faithful’s understanding of the daily Eucharistic celebration, identify the factors that support and hinder their participation, and explore possible efforts to enhance their participation in daily Eucharistic celebrations. The study employed a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The participants included the Quasi-Parish Priest, a BHK seminarian, the Head of the Liturgy Commission, as well as parishioners who regularly attended daily Eucharistic celebrations, those who attended occasionally, and those who rarely participated. The findings reveal that many participants perceive the daily Eucharist as a source of spiritual strength, a means of drawing closer to God, and an opportunity to deepen their faith. However, some still consider daily Mass to be a non-essential aspect of their spiritual life. Factors supporting participation include personal faith awareness, spiritual habits, and the desire to attain inner peace. In contrast, the main obstacles include work commitments, household responsibilities, limited understanding of the importance of daily Mass, distance from the church, and physical conditions. The study concludes that the faithful’s perception of the daily Eucharistic celebration significantly influences their level of participation in the life of the Church. A deeper understanding of the meaning of the daily Eucharist leads to greater participation in daily Eucharistic celebrations.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the meaning of the Torok Tae prayer as an expression of thanksgiving for the harvest in the Eucharistic Celebration at Colol Outstation, Saint Peter Colol Parish, Diocese of Ruteng. Torok Tae is a traditional prayer of the Manggarai community that has been passed down through generations as an expression of gratitude to God for the harvest while reflecting respect for the values of life, communal solidarity, and the harmonious relationship between human beings, nature, and the Creator. This research employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with the parish priest, traditional leaders, liturgical ministers, and parishioners, as well as documentation studies. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and systematic conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the Torok Tae prayer embodies religious, theological, social, cultural, and ecological values that are closely aligned with the spirituality of thanksgiving celebrated in the Eucharist. The integration of this traditional prayer into the liturgy represents a form of liturgical inculturation that enriches the faithful's participation without diminishing the essential nature of the Eucharist as the source and summit of Christian life. Furthermore, the incorporation of Torok Tae into the Eucharistic Celebration demonstrates that local cultural values can serve as an effective medium for contextual evangelization while strengthening the identity of the local Church. Therefore, this practice possesses significant pastoral relevance in fostering the faith life of the Christian community, preserving Manggarai cultural heritage, and promoting a harmonious dialogue between the Catholic faith and local culture.
