Abstract

Studies on the opinions of the Tābi'īn and ijtihād as sources of Qur'anic interpretation have generally been discussed separately, with limited attention to their epistemological relationship within the framework of qawā'id al-tafsīr as a methodological basis for evaluating contemporary Qur'anic exegesis. This study aims to reconstruct the epistemological position of the opinions of the Tābi'īn and ijtihād in the hierarchy of interpretive sources and to formulate an integrative conceptual model that explains their relationship in the development of contemporary Qur'anic interpretation. This research employs a qualitative library research approach by examining classical works of Qur'anic exegesis and Qur'anic sciences, including Jāmi' al-Bayān by al-Ṭabarī, Tafsīr al-Qur'ān al-'Aẓīm by Ibn Kathīr, al-Burhān fī 'Ulūm al-Qur'ān by al-Zarkashī, and al-Itqān fī 'Ulūm al-Qur'ān by al-Suyūṭī, which are analyzed comparatively alongside the perspectives of contemporary Muslim scholars. The findings demonstrate that the authority of the opinions of the Tābi'īn is not absolute but is determined by the authenticity of the transmitted reports, the reliability of their chains of transmission, and their conformity with the established principles of qawā'id al-tafsīr. Likewise, ijtihād is recognized as a legitimate source of interpretation only when it adheres to the methodological principles governing Qur'anic exegesis rather than representing unrestricted interpretive freedom. This study proposes an integrative epistemological model positioning the opinions of the Tābi'īn as the authoritative transmitted foundation (naql) and ijtihād as the methodological instrument for contextualizing Qur'anic meanings in response to contemporary issues. This model contributes theoretically to strengthening the methodological framework of Qur'anic interpretation and provides an evaluative basis for assessing the validity of contemporary exegetical approaches.

Abstract

This study comparatively examines the exegetical methodologies of Tafsir al-Kasyaf by al-Zamakhsyari and Anwar al-Tanzil wa Asrar al-Ta’wil by al-Baidhawi, while proposing a conceptual model of the methodological reconstruction employed by al-Baidhawi in responding to his predecessor’s interpretation. This library research employs a qualitative comparative-hermeneutical approach: the comparative dimension is operationalized through six indicators (linguistic structure, argumentation, use of transmitted reports, theological orientation, ta’wil technique, and use of hadith), while the philosophical-hermeneutical dimension draws on Palmer’s (1969) framework to read the methodological intent behind each exegete’s redactional choices. Primary data were drawn from the two classical commentaries; secondary data came from relevant literature on exegesis, Islamic theology, and scholarly articles. This study proposes a new conceptual model—built inductively from close reading rather than adopted as a fixed classical term—describing al-Baidhawi’s tahdzib strategy through three patterns: hadzaf (elimination), talwin (redactional modification), and ta’kid (theological reinforcement). The findings show that Tafsir al-Kasyaf is characterized by a rational-linguistic approach grounded in Mu’tazilite theology, while Anwar al-Tanzil integrates al-Zamakhsyari’s linguistic sophistication with Ash’arite theological principles and a more proportional use of transmitted reports. The relationship between the two works is not mere textual reproduction but a systematic process of tahdzib. As an exploratory model still grounded in two verses, these findings should be tested on a broader corpus of mutashabihat verses, yet they already indicate that Anwar al-Tanzil represents a methodological transformation enriching the classical Sunni exegetical tradition.
