Abstract

Tafsīr bi al-Ma’ṡūr has traditionally been regarded as the most authoritative approach to Qur'anic exegesis because it relies on transmitted reports (naql) from the Qur'an, the Prophet, the Companions, and the Successors. This study examines the epistemological foundation of tafsīr bi al-Ma’ṡūr in Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī’s Al-Durr al-Manṡūr, evaluates the authority of its transmitted reports, and explores its relevance to contemporary Qur'anic studies. Using a qualitative library research approach with descriptive-analytical and critical methods, the study analyzes Al-Durr al-Manṡūr alongside classical and recent literature (2020–2026). Data were analyzed through the Miles and Huberman interactive model, supported by riwāyah and dirāyah criticism. The findings indicate that although Al-Durr al-Manṡūr prioritizes transmitted knowledge as the foundation of Qur'anic interpretation, its omission of complete isnād, lack of authenticity classification, and inclusion of Isrā’īliyyāt narratives weaken its epistemological authority if accepted uncritically. The study concludes that the work should be treated as a valuable repository of exegetical traditions requiring rigorous verification through ḥadīth and tafsīr criticism to maintain its relevance and methodological credibility in contemporary Qur'anic scholarship.

Abstract

This article examines the rationality of Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī's exegesis in Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb as a model of meaning-making that integrates revelatory authority with burhānī reasoning. The central problem addressed is how al-Rāzī constructed an exegetical method saturated with kalam argumentation, Aristotelian logic, and natural knowledge without detaching from the textual and transmitted tradition. Employing a qualitative library-based method with a historical-hermeneutical approach, this study examines the primary text of Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb alongside more than thirty recent secondary sources to map this pattern of rationality. The findings indicate that al-Rāzī's rationality is moderately Ash'arite, positioning reason as an instrument for defending and elucidating revelation rather than as an independent authority as held by the Mu'tazilites. This pattern appears in his use of imaginary dialogue, the mas'alah-bahth classification, ta'wīl of ambiguous verses, and the integration of munāsabah, philosophy, and natural science into exegesis. The article argues that al-Rāzī's rationality offers a paradigm relevant to contemporary discourse on the relationship between reason and revelation, while serving as a critical reference for developing an integrative epistemology of tafsir amid the challenges of modern scientific secularization.
