Abstract

Background: Patient evacuation is a critical mobilization procedure in disaster management or medical emergencies. Proficiency in patient evacuation is a fundamental competency that health students must master to minimize the risk of further injury during emergency situations. Purpose: To enhance students' motor skills in performing safe and effective patient evacuation through the application of a hands-on simulation method. Method: This activity was conducted on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, from 13:00 to 16:00 WIB at the Emergency Nursing Laboratory, involving 16 health students as participants. The procedure prioritized a hands-on simulation approach featuring interactive dialogue and active group participation, covering essential evacuation topics such as patient safety principles, manual mechanical transfer techniques, and the operation of assistive devices like stretchers. Participants' motor skill competencies were measured using an observation instrument—specifically a procedural assessment checklist—evaluated before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the training, with results presented descriptively. Results: The findings indicate that prior to the training intervention (pre-test), 12 participants (75.0%) fell into the "sufficient" category, while 4 participants (25.0%) were in the "good" category. Following the training intervention (post-test), the distribution shifted to 2 participants (12.5%) in the "sufficient" category and 14 participants (87.5%) in the "good" category. Regarding knowledge levels and understanding of evacuation safety information, the majority of participants (13 individuals or 81.3%) fell into the "good" category. Conclusion: Training on patient evacuation techniques for health science students using a hands-on simulation method proved highly effective in strengthening motor and psychomotor competencies. Reinforcing collective understanding of emergency management—combined with direct simulation of tactical actions—contributed significantly to enhancing individual autonomy, precision, confidence, and psychological readiness in managing safety risks during evacuation. The synergy between sound theoretical knowledge and proficiency in preventive actions will have a broad impact on strengthening community emergency response systems. Suggestion: Participants are encouraged to consistently hone their tactical skills through independent practice and active participation in clinical group discussions to maintain the sharpness of their motor reflexes during evacuations. Educational institutions and the academic community are also urged to actively provide motivation and support by facilitating, encouraging, and guiding students in periodic, structured disaster training activities to prevent the risk of secondary injury to patients. Keywords: Hands-on simulation; Motor competence; Patient evacuation; Training Pendahuluan: Evakuasi pasien merupakan tindakan mobilisasi kritis dalam manajemen bencana atau kondisi darurat medis.

Abstract

Disaster response by nurses in border areas requires an effective strategy to improve disaster preparedness and response. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between disaster emergency response and nurse preparedness in border areas. The study design used an analytical survey with a cross-sectional technique. The number of respondents was 126 nurses in border areas with a purposive sampling approach and analysis using the chi-square test. The study showed that the majority of nurses' preparedness level was good (71.4%). Research variables that were significantly related to nurse preparedness included nurse response with a Pvalue = 0.030, emergency response time with a Pvalue = 0.016 and emergency/disaster training with a Pvalue = 0.042. It is recommended that nurses in border areas need to increase the frequency and quality of disaster emergency training periodically to strengthen nurse preparedness and can optimize response time quickly and accurately.
