Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of implementing Project-Based Learning (PjBL) within the Merdeka Curriculum using a deep learning approach on improving students’ speaking skills at a Vocational High School (SMK). The research employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. The participants consisted of two classes: an experimental class taught using PjBL with a deep learning approach and a control class taught using conventional instruction. Data were collected through speaking tests (pre-test and post-test), classroom observations, and documentation. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis to determine differences in speaking skill improvement between the two groups. The findings indicate that the experimental class showed a significantly greater improvement in speaking skills compared to the control class. The implementation of PjBL enhanced students’ active engagement, confidence, fluency, pronunciation accuracy, and grammatical use through contextual project activities relevant to workplace needs. Therefore, it can be concluded that Project-Based Learning within the Merdeka Curriculum using a deep learning approach has a positive and significant effect on improving vocational students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

Writing competence is an essential outcome of English learning in vocational high schools, particularly for students of Computer and Network Engineering who are expected to communicate technical experiences, internship activities, and workplace procedures in English. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Contextual Based Learning in improving students’ ability to write recount texts. The study was designed as a quasi-experimental research using a non-equivalent control group design. The participants consisted of two Grade X vocational classes: one experimental class receiving ESP contextual instruction and one control class receiving conventional instruction. The intervention integrated computer-networking themes, authentic workplace vocabulary, guided genre modeling, collaborative drafting, and reflection on students’ vocational experiences. Data were collected through writing pre-tests and post-tests, an analytic writing rubric, observation sheets, and student response questionnaires. The illustrative analysis shows that the experimental group gained a higher post-test mean score than the control group, particularly in content development, text organization, vocabulary relevance, and grammatical accuracy. The independent-samples test and normalized gain analysis indicate that ESP Contextual Based Learning has a meaningful effect on recount text writing achievement. The findings imply that contextualized ESP instruction can bridge general English learning and vocational communication needs by making writing tasks more authentic, purposeful, and connected to students’ technical fields.

Abstract

This article discusses the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) learning to strengthen the speaking skills of vocational high school students. The problem addressed is the gap between workplace communication demands and students' limited opportunities to practice job-related English speaking in authentic, iterative, and feedback-rich situations. The study employs a conceptual research and development approach by synthesizing recent literature on AI in education, GenAI in language learning, ESP pedagogy, and AI-supported speaking assessment. The result is an AI-ESP Speaking Cycle consisting of needs analysis, prompt design, AI-supported role-play, teacher validation, reflective revision, and authentic speaking performance. The model positions GenAI as a conversational partner, scenario generator, feedback assistant, and vocabulary scaffold, while the teacher remains the pedagogical controller who verifies language accuracy, ethics, and occupational relevance. The proposed model provides a practical framework for vocational English teachers to integrate GenAI responsibly through industry-based scenarios, speaking rubrics, prompt banks, and risk mitigation procedures. The article concludes that GenAI can expand speaking practice and personalized feedback in ESP classes, but its implementation requires teacher mediation, AI literacy, data privacy awareness, and assessment designs that prioritize human communication competence.
