Abstract

Mastering the syntactic properties of Noun Phrases (NPs) remains a major hurdle for Indonesian students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This research aims to categorize typical syntactic errors made by these learners and evaluate how their native language (L1) structural logic interferes with English NP formation. By applying a syntactic analysis, the study contrasts the prenominal, right-branching framework of English with the head-initial, post-nominal patterns found in Indonesian. The investigation also considers the importance of syntax in cultivating Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and examines how the misuse of modifiers and determiners leads to predictable error patterns. The results indicate that students frequently transpose Indonesian word order onto English, resulting in systematic misorderings and omissions. Ultimately, this study offers pedagogical strategies for improving syntactic instruction to enhance linguistic precision and student participation in EFL settings.

Abstract

This study explores the syntactic and stylistic aspects of Ed Sheeran’s song Perfect (2017) to reveal how grammatical structures contribute to emotional and artistic meaning. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes the song’s lyrics based on phrase structure theory and grammatical framework. The analysis focuses on sentence types, phrase patterns, and clause relations. The findings show that declarative sentences dominate the lyrics, expressing sincerity and emotional clarity, while imperative and interrogative forms add variation and intimacy. Noun, verb, and prepositional phrases collectively create vivid imagery and smooth narrative flow. The combination of independent and dependent clauses reflects both certainty and vulnerability, central to the song’s romantic theme. Stylistic devices such as ellipsis and repetition enhance rhythm and emotional depth. Overall, the study concludes that syntax in song lyrics functions beyond structure, shaping style and meaning. The findings also demonstrate the potential of song lyrics as authentic materials for English language teaching.

Abstract

The phenomenon of overthinking among Generation Z is intensifying alongside mounting academic, social, and digital pressures; however, modern psychological approaches often frame it merely as a cognitive symptom, overlooking deeper spiritual dimensions. This paper aims to establish conceptual distinctions between tafakkur, waswas, and qalq within the framework of Qur’anic psychology to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the mental dynamics of the contemporary generation. A qualitative, library-based approach was employed, utilizing the thematic exegesis mawḍūʻī method combined with semantic and conceptual analyses of key Qur’anic terms. The results reveal clear differentiations: tafakkur functions as constructive cognitive reflection directed toward meaning and wisdom; waswas emerges as a repetitive, irrational cognitive distortion that undermines self-integration; and qalq represents an affective manifestation—an inner restlessness rooted in an imbalance between cognition and spirituality. Together, these three form an interconnected spectrum of mental experiences, yet each possesses distinct epistemic and functional characteristics. These findings underscore the capacity of the Qur’anic psychological framework to provide a more holistic and integrative conceptual classification capable of bridging cognitive and affective dimensions in the understanding of overthinking, while simultaneously paving the way for the development of psychological intervention models grounded in Qur’anic values systematically and contextually.
