Abstract

This study explores the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) in schools through the lens of Anthony Giddens' structuration theory. Field findings reveal that TQM is often applied in a bureaucratic and symbolic manner, with minimal involvement from school members and a lack of participatory reflection forums. Using the structuration framework, this study highlights that TQM structures are not fixed entities, but are formed and reproduced through the social practices of school actors. Inequities in rules and resource distribution weaken the agency of school members, while the absence of reflective spaces hinders conscious structural transformation. The analysis shows that strengthening school members as active agents is essential in building a dynamic and sustainable quality management structure. Therefore, it is recommended that schools develop collaborative structures, ensure equitable distribution of resources, establish open forums for collective reflection, and integrate TQM principles into daily practices. This study contributes theoretically to quality management approaches in educational institutions by emphasizing the reciprocal relationship between structure and agency.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the principal's leadership in building a culture of educational quality at SDIT Al-Kautsar Mukomuko. It employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The principal and teachers served as research informants. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, while source and method triangulation was used to establish trustworthiness. The findings show that the principal practices adaptive situational leadership by fostering collaboration among all members of the school community. The implementation strategies include improving the learning process, developing teacher competence, managing supervision, and applying standard operating procedures for educational quality. Supporting factors include the principal's commitment, teacher quality, and parental support, whereas the principal obstacle is limited physical infrastructure. The findings underscore the importance of collaborative leadership and continuous evaluation in institutionalizing a culture of educational quality.

Abstract

Improving the quality of learning in Islamic boarding schools is essential to ensure that Islamic scholarly traditions remain relevant amid developments in modern education. This study analyzes how the integration of Total Quality Management (TQM) principles into the Bahsul Kutub program can strengthen educational quality at Fadlun Minallah Islamic Boarding School. Using a qualitative approach involving observation, interviews, and document analysis, the study examines the roles of leadership and academic governance, as well as the dynamics of the Bahsul Kutub forum, in developing a culture of quality within the pesantren. The findings indicate that applying TQM principles—including visionary leadership, continuous improvement, human resource development, and process management—makes the implementation of Bahsul Kutub more systematic and effective. The program not only preserves the tradition of studying classical Islamic texts but also functions as a learning strategy that improves santri literacy in the kitab kuning, analytical competence, and critical-thinking skills. Its positive effects are evident in enhanced academic quality, intellectual development, a stronger scholarly character, and santri achievements in the Musabaqah Qira’atul Kutub (MQK) competition. This study confirms that integrating TQM and Bahsul Kutub offers a promising model for strengthening the quality of pesantren education. Future research should develop quantitative instruments for critical evaluation and compare the effectiveness of this model across different Islamic boarding schools.
