Abstract

The Eucharist for the Church is seen as the culmination of the whole life of faith. The Eucharist influences the faithful who participate in it in the form of spiritual and social values. This study aims to examine the relationship between participation in the Eucharist and the implementation of social values in members of the Holy Trinity Community (KTM). Quantitative method was applied with data collection technique through questionnaires to 50 members of KTM. The results of the analysis show that the intensity of participation in the Eucharist is directly proportional to the level of appreciation of social values. Those participating in the Eucharist are also active in social activities. The research findings prove that there is a connection between spiritual life and social practices in religious communities. Where, participation in the Eucharist encourages greater involvement in social life.

Abstract

The people of Toraja, South Sulawesi are known to have social stratification as part of their culture. Such stratification at the same time influenced the concept of salvation in their ancestral belief, Aluk To Dolo. Eternal salvation, in the concept of man's union with the highest God, Puang Matua, could only be obtained by those who have a high social class, Tana’ Bulaan. Meanwhile, those who came from low social classes, in addition to having limited space in society, also culturally-religiously were difficult to obtain salvation. Using the literature method, this paper aims to provide a christological solution to this religio-cultural problem, especially after Christianity encountered Toraja culture. As a result, contextual christology provided an answer to this gap. The Son as the ‘Word made flesh’ brought salvation to the Torajan people in general with no more social stratification boundaries in the new understanding.

Abstract

The Jewish community greatly respects death, as indicated by the words of Ecclesiastes in chapter 7:2: “It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart”. In practice, the Jewish tradition of mourning or avelut (אֲבֵלוּת) lasts for a long period of time and involves various stages of mourning. The Torajans do the same thing through the tongkon tradition in the Rambu Solo' ceremony. Because they so respect the death of family members, the Toraja people carry out tongkon in the form of Rambu Solo' for a long period of time. The qualitative method with a Cross-Textual Hermeneutics and comparative approach used in this study attempts to find a theological bridge that can bring these two mourning traditions into dialogue. The results of the study show that, in addition to differences, there are similarities in Jewish mourning and tongkon, which transform and enrich both traditions. Both traditions are forms of social support for bereaved families. Theologically, both are forms of respect for the Creator as the holder of human life.
