Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the political communication strategy of members of the Medan City Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) in conducting recess activities in the Constituency of Two Medan Labuhan Districts. Recess is an important constitutional mechanism for legislators to collect constituent aspirations and strengthen the relationship between the legislature and the community. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation. Informants comprised one DPRD member as the key informant and five constituent community members as supporting informants. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that the communication strategies employed include: (1) direct communication through face-to-face forums and constituent dialogue; (2) utilization of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and official websites for disseminating information and documenting recess activities; and (3) synergy with the Musrenbang mechanism to follow up on public aspirations. Despite challenges such as the diversity of constituent characteristics and aspirations not yet fully realized, council members have developed their own approaches to maximize the effectiveness of recess activities. This study concludes that an integrative communication strategy combining direct and digital approaches is crucial to the successful absorption of aspirations during recess.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to examine audience opinions regarding the "Cocast Mental Health" program (Episode 9) and its impact on behavioral changes among Generation Z members of the Youth Commission of the Archdiocese of Medan. The study employs behavioral change theory and the concept of audience opinion, utilizing a qualitative approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with Youth Commission members who had watched the episode. A thematic analysis was conducted to identify emerging patterns of opinion and behavioral changes. The results indicate that the "Cocast Mental Health" episode had a positive impact by enhancing Gen Z's understanding of and awareness regarding mental health. Predominant audience opinions were positive, particularly regarding the communicative and relevant presentation of the material; this fostered behavioral changes such as increased openness in discussing mental health, improved stress management, and active participation in activities supporting psychological well-being. Furthermore, a reduction in negative perceptions regarding mental health issues was observed among Gen Z, reflected in more empathetic and supportive attitudes. This study underscores the importance of digital educational media—such as "Cocast Mental Health"—as an effective instrument for shaping constructive public opinion and fostering positive behavioral changes among the younger generation. Abstract

One of the local information accounts that uses TikTok to disseminate information about events in the city of Medan is @MedanTalk, including crime-related content commonly referred to by its viewers as "rayap besi" (literally "iron termite," a colloquial term for metal-theft incidents). This study examines the opinions of Law Faculty students at Universitas Sari Mutiara Indonesia regarding this content, with particular attention to how information ethics shapes their judgments. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with six informants and analyzed using Iswandi Syahputra’s opinion-formation framework, comprising belief, value, and expectation. The results show that students' opinions are formed through selective belief in @MedanTalk as an initial, unverified source of information; a value orientation that weighs the informational benefits against legal and ethical standards, such as the presumption of innocence, privacy protection, and balanced reporting; and an expectation that both the account and the public adopt more accurate, verified, and responsible information practices. The findings indicate that information ethics functions as a key criterion through which law students evaluate citizen-generated crime content on social media.
