Abstract

Whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is one of the leading commodities in Indonesian brackishwater aquaculture due to its high production efficiency and strong market demand. Water quality is a key factor determining culture success, and aeration plays an essential role in maintaining dissolved oxygen (DO) levels while reducing the accumulation of toxic nitrogen compounds such as ammonia and nitrite. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different aeration systems on water quality and the survival of whiteleg shrimp at the Brackish Water Aquaculture Installation (IBAP) Banjar Kemuning, Sidoarjo, Indonesia. A comparative descriptive study was conducted using two treatments: a complete aeration system consisting of paddle wheels, blowers, and diffusers, and a single aeration system using paddle wheels only. The observed water quality parameters included temperature, pH, salinity, DO, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. The results showed that the complete aeration system maintained more stable water quality, characterized by higher DO levels and lower ammonia and nitrite concentrations than the single aeration system. The average survival rate (SR) of shrimp cultured under the complete aeration system was 76.99%, compared with 73.28% in the single aeration system. Overall, the complete aeration system was more effective in improving water quality and enhancing shrimp survival. Nevertheless, unstable water quality conditions, particularly elevated ammonia and nitrite concentrations and low DO levels, were associated with the occurrence of White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV). These findings highlight the importance of optimizing aeration as part of an integrated water quality management strategy to support sustainable whiteleg shrimp aquaculture.
