Abstract

The construction sector is one of the most vulnerable sectors to corruption. Previous publications have examined the causes, types, impacts, and strategies for preventing and eradicating corrupt practices in the construction sector. This research, however, focuses on the influence of cultural aspects on corrupt practices in the Indonesian construction sector. Through a mixed-method approach, this research identifies various forms of corruption in the construction sector and measures construction practitioners’ perceptions regarding the frequency of these corrupt practices. In summary, 14 forms of corrupt practices can occur at four stages of construction procurement. The analysis results also show practitioners’ perception of corruption as a norm in the construction business. This is motivated by the influence of cultural aspects in Indonesian society, especially related to the practice of connections and insiders, as well as a permissive attitude towards corruption. The results of this research contribute as a reference for stakeholders in understanding the influence of cultural aspects comprehensively so that they can take effective steps in establishing an anti-corruption culture in Indonesia.

Abstract

Many prior studies focused on construction workers' perceptions of safety compliance, but little or no research has been undertaken to investigate the relationship between construction project sacrifice and safety compliance. Construction project sacrifice – known as ‘tumbal proyek’ in the Indonesian Language is a socio-cultural phenomenon that still exists in Indonesian society. This research examines the perceptions of construction workers regarding project sacrifice and their relationship to workers’ compliance with construction safety management. A mixed-method approach was employed, which consisted of an integrative literature review and questionnaire surveys. In total, there were 102 valid survey responses, which were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling-Generalised Structured Component Analysis (SEM-GSCA). The analysis demonstrates a positive relationship between workers’ perceptions of project sacrifice and safety compliance. This study adds by offering empirical data on the phenomenon of project sacrifice and how workers' perceptions of it can influence the construction safety compliance in Indonesia. Although this is a context-specific study, the findings can serve as a reference for future research to enhance the safety climate in construction projects.

Abstract

In the digital era, innovative learning methods are key to increasing student engagement and understanding in engineering and construction. One of the increasingly emerging approaches is game-based learning (GBL), where games are used as interactive educational tools. This study explores the effectiveness of Minecraft: Education Edition in improving academic performance and engagement of students in the Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) Study Program at a university in Indonesia. This study used a mixed method, namely learning observation and questionnaire survey of students attending Minecraft-based lecture sessions. The findings of this study are presented in three main topics, namely the implementation of Minecraft: Education Edition as a learning medium, the Effectiveness of Minecraft as a Learning Medium for Construction Management, and implementation barriers. The results of this study are expected to provide insight into best practices in engineering education, especially in the application of interactive technology to improve learning effectiveness. This study also provides recommendations for higher education institutions to adopt game-based learning as part of innovative strategies in engineering learning. With increased student engagement and understanding through game-based simulations, Minecraft has the potential to be a revolutionary educational tool in the construction discipline.

Abstract

Project delays frequently occur in industrial equipment installation projects and significantly affect time performance and contractual commitments. This research aims to identify the dominant factors causing delays in the magnet separator installation project on the Barge Loading Conveyor (BLC) system and to propose practical solutions to improve schedule performance. The research focuses on administrative and material procurement factors as well as manpower factors, in line with the project characteristics. A quantitative–descriptive method was applied using baseline schedule analysis, planned and actual S-curve comparison, weekly and cumulative progress deviation calculations, and Schedule Performance Index (SPI) analysis. The results were supported by interviews with project stakeholders. The findings reveal that delays in administrative processes and procurement approval of the main equipment significantly impacted the project because these activities were on the critical path. In addition, limited manpower competency reduced field productivity, resulting in cumulative schedule deviations with SPI values below 1. The research concludes that procurement and manpower are the most dominant delay factors and emphasizes the importance of preventive planning strategies, including clear project day zero determination, integrated procurement scheduling, competency-based workforce planning, and detailed milestone control.

Abstract

Porous concrete is widely used as a sustainable construction material since it allows water to pass through its structure, reducing surface runoff and supporting groundwater recharge. However, its application is often limited by its low compressive strength. This study investigates the effect of adding superplasticiser at varying dosage levels: 0.3%, 0.6%, and 0.8% of cement weight, on the mechanical properties of porous concrete. The research was conducted through laboratory experiments, with material testing, slump testing, and compressive strength testing at 7 and 28 days of curing. The results showed that the addition of superplasticiser significantly improved the compressive strength of porous concrete without affecting its porosity. The highest compressive strength was achieved at a 0.8% dosage, reaching 23.01 MPa at 28 days, which represents a 21.4% increase compared to normal porous concrete. The slump test confirmed that all concrete mixtures maintained near-zero slump values, ensuring that permeability was not compromised. These findings suggest that superplasticiser is an effective additive for improving the strength of porous concrete while preserving its essential drainage function. The research supports the broader application of porous concrete in sustainable infrastructure, especially in areas where both strength and water management are critical.

Abstract

Objectives: This study re-examines the concept of auditor independence in high-corruption environments, arguing that independence is not merely a professional attribute, but an outcome constrained by multilevel institutional, organizational, and individual pressures.Methodology: The study identifies the determinants of auditor behaviour through a survey analysed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA).Finding: We identify eleven interrelated factors shaping auditor behaviour, which cluster into three dimensions: (1) Capability and Stance, (2) Alignment and Resourcing, and (3) Protection and Pressure. The findings suggest that auditors operate not as fully independent monitors but as constrained agents embedded within corruption-prone systems, where institutional pressures, organizational incentives, and personal risks jointly shape audit outcomes. Conclusion: This study shifts the conceptualization of auditor independence from an assumed professional condition to a context-dependent outcome. By integrating agency, fraud-triangle, and institutional perspectives, we show that the audit expectation gap reflects structural constraints rather than mere misunderstanding of auditor roles.

Abstract

This study examines how Buddhist, Balinese Hindu, and Christian communities in Indonesia address contemporary challenges, including youth identity crises and environmental degradation, through spiritual teachings and practices. Using a mixed-method approach, this research draws on interviews with religious leaders, observations of faith-based environmental initiatives, and questionnaire surveys targeting a younger generation. Findings reveal that while youth struggle with digital dependency and moral disconnection, religious traditions offer grounded pathways for identity formation and ethical behavior. In Buddhism, mindfulness and digital engagement are vital features. Balinese Hinduism fosters a sense of belonging through ritual and ecological participation. Christianity addresses spiritual disconnection through stewardship and self-discipline. Each faith frames environmental responsibility not merely as a civic duty, but as a sacred act integrated into daily worship and community life. This study concludes that interfaith collaboration and educational integration of spiritual values can empower youth to live with clarity, resilience, and ecological awareness, contributing meaningfully to a sustainable and morally grounded society.

Abstract

Construction project delays are a common problem that directly affect time efficiency and lead to cost overruns. A similar case occurred in a warehouse construction project in West Karawang, which experienced a one-month delay due to unprepared field conditions and obstructed work access. This study aims to reduce time and cost overruns caused by these delays by using the Crashing Method, which accelerates work through additional labor. The analysis was conducted using Microsoft Project software to identify the project’s critical path. The results showed that the project duration could be reduced by five working days (4.21%), and costs were reduced by IDR 263,126,481.43 (2.02%) from the total normal cost of IDR 13,002,054,455.44. Activities classified as critical include 13 types of work, including roof trusses, roof coverings, and fascia painting. These findings confirm that the crashing method is an effective strategy for minimizing the impact of delays without sacrificing construction quality.
