Abstract

Cinnamon has long been used in traditional medicine and is gaining increasing attention in modern scientific circles due to its bioactive compounds, such as cinnamaldehyde, polyphenols, and flavonoids, which play a role in antihyperglycemic effects and improving insulin sensitivity. Several clinical trials have shown that cinnamon supplementation (1–6 grams per day for 8–16 weeks) can reduce fasting blood glucose levels by 10–29 mg/dL and HbA1c by 0.4–0.7% in patients with type 2 diabetes.This study aims to evaluate the potential of cinnamon as an antidiabetic agent by reviewing scientific evidence related to its mechanism of action, effectiveness, and safety of long-term consumption. A literature search was conducted through the PubMed and Google Scholar databases using the keywords “Cinnamon” AND “Antidiabetes” for articles published in the period 2003–2023. The included articles included in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trial experimental studies, while review articles and meta-analyses were excluded. A total of 30 articles that met the criteria were analyzed descriptively.The review results suggest that cinnamon works through the mechanism of inhibiting the enzyme α-glucosidase and increasing insulin sensitivity, which contribute to lower blood glucose and HbA1c levels. However, heterogeneity in the type of cinnamon used, variation in dosage, method of consumption, and the lack of long-term studies on its safety are limitations that need to be considered. Therefore, further research is needed, especially large-scale clinical trials with longer duration, to confirm the efficacy and safety of cinnamon in the management of diabetes.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of education on the adherence of adolescent girls to iron supplementation tablets (IST). Anemia in adolescent girls is a significant health problem, influenced by iron loss during menstruation and increased iron requirements during growth. Low adherence to IST consumption is caused by various factors, including unpleasant side effects after consuming IST, the perception of being healthy and not needing medication, and a lack of knowledge about the dangers of iron deficiency anemia in adolescence. The method used is a narrative review, with research journal sources related to the adherence of adolescent girls in consuming IST. These research journals were obtained from Google Scholar and selected those published in the last five years (2019-2023). The review results indicate the importance of education in increasing adherence to IST consumption. Audiovisual methods, such as videos and YouTube, have proven effective. Additionally, support from health workers and pharmacists is crucial in increasing the adherence of adolescent girls to IST consumption. It is concluded that innovative education and good support are essential in increasing the adherence of adolescent girls to IST consumption.

Abstract

Stres nitrosatif yang dimediasi oleh nitric oxide (NO) berlebih berkontribusi pada patogenesis berbagai penyakit degeneratif dan inflamasi kronis. Rumput kebar (Biophytum petersianum Klotzsch) merupakan tanaman obat asal Papua yang memiliki potensi antioksidan, namun data komparatif efektivitas pelarut air dan etanol dalam menghambat aktivitas NO masih terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan aktivitas ekstrak air dan ekstrak etanol rumput kebar sebagai nitrit oksida inhibitor serta menentukan profil fitokimianya. Herba rumput kebar diekstraksi menggunakan metode perebusan (air) dan maserasi (etanol 96%). Analisis fitokimia dilakukan melalui skrining kualitatif dan kromatografi lapis tipis (KLT), sedangkan aktivitas penghambatan NO diuji menggunakan metode sodium nitroprusside (SNP) dengan reagen Griess. Hasil menunjukkan ekstrak air memiliki rendemen 3,43% berbentuk serbuk cokelat, sedangkan ekstrak etanol memiliki rendemen 15,91% berupa ekstrak kental hijau kehitaman. Keduanya teridentifikasi mengandung flavonoid, tanin, dan polifenol. Uji aktivitas menunjukkan ekstrak air memiliki nilai IC₅₀ sebesar 71,55 ± 5,57 µg/mL dan ekstrak etanol sebesar 165,90 ± 10,65 µg/mL. Ekstrak air menunjukkan aktivitas penghambatan NO sekitar 2,32 kali lebih kuat dibandingkan ekstrak etanol. Temuan ini menyimpulkan bahwa ekstrak air rumput kebar merupakan inhibitor NO yang lebih potensial, sehingga air dapat dipertimbangkan sebagai pelarut yang lebih efektif untuk aplikasi farmakologis terkait stres nitrosatif.
