Abstract

This article critically examines the relationship between efficiency and justice in the Islamic financial system and how both values are implemented within modern financial institutions. From an Islamic perspective, efficiency is not merely measured by profitability and productivity but by the extent to which economic activities promote social welfare and balance. The principle of justice (al-‘adl) serves as the moral foundation that distinguishes Islamic finance from the conventional system, which often prioritizes profit over ethics. This study employs a qualitative library research approach, analyzing scholarly literature and Islamic financial regulations. The findings reveal that Islamic finance still faces significant challenges in balancing efficiency and justice, primarily due to the dominance of trade-based products (murabahah) and the limited application of profit-sharing systems (mudharabah and musyarakah). Structural reform through product innovation, governance enhancement, and digitalization guided by the maqasid al-shari‘ah framework is essential to make Islamic finance genuinely just, inclusive, and sustainable. Thus, efficiency and justice should not remain normative ideals but become concrete pillars in realizing equitable economic prosperity.

Abstract

This article explores the influence of Islam in shaping the cultural identity of the Malay community a historical process that unfolded through trade routes, Islamic preaching (da'wah), and educational institutions since the 13th century CE. Islamization in the Malay world was not merely the spread of a religion but a complex cultural transformation that resulted in a synthesis between Islamic teachings and local traditions. This study aims to identify and analyze the changes in belief systems, the transformation of social values, and the manifestation of the Malay-Islamic identity in contemporary life. The research adopts a cultural anthropology and historical approach, with data collected through literature studies and cultural observation. The findings indicate that the arrival of Islam gradually replaced the animistic and Hindu-Buddhist belief structures with a monotheistic worldview based on tawhid (the oneness of God). Islam also influenced various cultural expressions, including oral traditions, literature, and social practices. Rather than erasing local elements, Islam integrated and transformed them through a selective process, resulting in a unique and rooted Malay-Islamic identity. This identity functions not only as a religious marker but also plays a vital role in shaping the direction of cultural, educational, and political policies in the Malay world today. The study also highlights the urgency of preserving the Malay-Islamic identity amid globalization and offers recommendations for further interdisciplinary research on the topic.

Abstract

The character crisis is a major challenge in modern education, especially amidst globalization and the moral decline affecting younger generations. Current character education models tend to emphasize cognitive and behavioral aspects while often neglecting the deeper dimension of spirituality. In this context, the concept of tazkiyatun nafs as introduced by Hasan al-Banna offers a comprehensive paradigm for character education. Tazkiyah refers not only to the purification of the soul but also to a transformative process of personality development through the cultivation of spiritual values such as sincerity, self-reflection (muhasabah), and commitment to universal goodness. This study adopts a qualitative approach using content analysis of Hasan al-Banna’s works, particularly his epistles that emphasize spiritual and educational themes. The researcher analyzes al-Banna’s philosophical framework on human nature as both a spiritual and social being, and how tazkiyah serves as the foundation for holistic educational reform. Findings show that tazkiyatun nafs can be effectively integrated into character education through a holistic approach that combines spiritual, emotional, and social dimensions. The implication of this study is the need for a paradigm shift in character education from merely shaping behavior to nurturing the soul in a comprehensive manner.
