Abstract

Gourami fish (Osphronemus goramy) is a freshwater commodity with high economic value and stable market demand, playing an important role in supporting community income and food security. Kemranjen Subdistrict, Banyumas Regency is known as a centre for gourami cultivation with great potential due to the availability of water resources, the experience of farmers, and government programme support. However, the development of this area still faces various obstacles such as technological limitations, fluctuations in feed prices, variations in the quality of cultivation management, environmental challenges and suboptimal digital marketing. These conditions require appropriate policy strategies to increase productivity and business sustainability. This research aims to formulate a strategy for developing the gurami farming area in Kemranjen Subdistrict through SWOT analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that affect the development of the area. Primary data was collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires to 40 respondents consisting of farmers, fisheries extension workers, village officials, and the Banyumas Regency Fisheries Service. IFAS (Internal Factors Analysis Summary) and EFAS (External Factors Analysis Summary) analyses were used to determine the position of the area development strategy. The results of the study show a value of (S-W) = +0.408 and (O-T) = +0.336, placing the area in Quadrant I (aggressive strategy), which is a condition where internal strengths can be optimally utilised to seize external opportunities. The priority strategies include the application of modern cultivation technology, strengthening digital marketing, increasing human resource capacity, and sustainable environmental management. The implementation of these strategies is expected to increase the competitiveness of the gurami cultivation area and support the improvement of the welfare of farmers in Kemranjen Sub-district.

Abstract

The high cost of commercial feed is a major constraint on aquaculture development because it accounts for a substantial proportion of total production costs. BUMDes Hardjo Utomo in Sukoharjo Village, Wonosobo Regency, has developed Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae, commonly known as maggots, as a locally available and environmentally sustainable alternative feed ingredient. However, its development is constrained by limited cultivation infrastructure, inadequate sanitation, low production efficiency, and insufficient technical knowledge among community members. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and understanding of BUMDes managers, fish farmers, and local residents regarding intensive BSF larvae cultivation to support aquaculture feed self-sufficiency. The program was implemented through educational presentations, interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and brief interviews. The materials covered the BSF life cycle, selection and management of organic waste, preparation of cultivation media, moisture control, sanitation, harvesting techniques, and the utilization of BSF larvae as an alternative protein source for fish feed. The participants showed high enthusiasm and actively discussed practical problems, including low larval productivity, unpleasant odors, contamination by inorganic waste, and difficulties in maintaining cultivation media quality. The post-activity evaluation indicated that the participants gained a better understanding of hygienic cultivation practices, organic waste separation, environmental management, and efficient harvesting methods. The activity also increased community awareness of the economic and environmental benefits of BSF cultivation as part of a circular economy system. In conclusion, the program improved community knowledge and motivation to implement more intensive and sustainable BSF larvae cultivation, thereby supporting local aquaculture feed self-sufficiency and environmentally responsible organic waste management in Sukoharjo Village.
