Abstract

Kode bahasa sering digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari, khususnya dalam kegiatan pembelajaran di kelas. Penggunaan kode bahasa menjadi permasalahan utama yang menarik untuk diteliti karena tidak semua penutur maupun petutur memahami penggunaan kode bahasa yang berbeda, hal ini juga ditemukan selama kegiatan pembelajaran di sekolah menengah atas di Bangkalan, Madura. Penggunaan kode bahasa dapat diteleti dengan pendekatan kajian Sosiolinguistik untuk melihat penggunaan kode bahasa dalam kehidupan masyarakat. Penelitan dengan desain dekriptif kualitatif ini dilakukan untuk melihat penggunaan kode bahasa yanng terjadi di sekolah menengah atas di Bangkalan, Madura. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan kode bahasa yang terjadi selama proses pembelajaran di kelas dilakukan untuk tujuan komunikasi berbahasa, khususnya dalam menyampaikan pesan kepada lawan bicara selama proses belajar mengajar. Penggunaan kode bahasa berupa peralihan bahasa dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Madura atau pencampuran bahasa Indonesia dan Madura pada saat menjelaskan materi di kelas dilakukan sebagai upaya untuk memberikan pemahaman terhadap materi pembelajaran di kelas. Hasil penelitian ini memberikan implementasi bahwa penggunaan kode bahasa berupa bilingualisme dalam kegiatan pembelajaran dapat digunakan untuk tujuan pembelajaran di kelas sehingga komunikasi dapat berjalan dengan baik.

Abstract

The main problem in this study is the use of teaching methods that are still conventional in Islamic boarding schools in learning English. This causes students to feel bored and less motivated to participate in English learning activities in Islamic boarding schools so innovation is needed in learning English by applying information and communication technology (ICT). This study aimed to investigate students’ perceptions of using information and communication technology (ICT), such as LCD Projectors and Microsoft PowerPoint, to improve English speaking skills at the boarding school. The study was conducted at a boarding school in Bangkalan, involving 42 students, consisting of 24 science students and 18 social science students. The method was descriptive qualitative, with data collected through a Google Form questionnaire. The results showed that the majority of students, 54.94%, had a positive view of using ICT, considering it effective in improving speaking skills and boosting confidence. In addition, the use of ICT was also found to increase student engagement and create a more interactive learning environment. The results of this study provide recommendations that the use of ICT in English learning in Islamic boarding schools is effective for use as a learning medium.

Abstract

Learning media in Islamic boarding schools have not been optimally implemented for English learning, the use of interactive and interesting media is still lacking. This study aims to investigate the use of PowerPoint as a medium for English learning in Islamic boarding schools. This study was conducted in one of the Islamic boarding schools in Bangkalan involving representatives of 5 science and social studies students, using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five selected students and classroom observations. The findings of the study revealed that the integration of multimedia elements, such as videos and interactive games in PowerPoint presentations, significantly increased student interest and participation during learning. This study highlights that PowerPoint facilitates clear and concise presentation of materials, allowing students to focus on important concepts without excessive text. Ultimately, this study concludes that PowerPoint serves as an effective teaching tool that enriches the learning experience in an Islamic boarding school educational environment with Islamic values.

Abstract

Error analysis is a key tool for understanding second language development and designing targeted instruction in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. Despite the growing use of mobile-based assessment platforms, little is known about large-scale error patterns and their variation across proficiency levels and task types. This study analyzed 31,482 errors from 15,000 EnglishScore practice test sessions completed by 1,500 EFL learners, categorized into grammatical, lexical, syntactic, and functional domains using a modified Surface Strategy Taxonomy. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design combined descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation with qualitative coding to examine error frequency, distribution, and interrelationships across Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) proficiency levels and task types. Results showed that grammatical errors were most frequent overall, especially among beginners, while lexical and functional errors increased at higher proficiency levels. Task type significantly influenced error distribution, with gap-fill tasks eliciting the highest grammatical and lexical errors, and sentence reordering and discourse-based tasks revealing greater syntactic and functional weaknesses. Strong correlations among error types indicated that linguistic competencies are interconnected, underscoring the need for integrated, proficiency-sensitive, and task-informed instruction. The findings contribute to interlanguage development theory and offer practical guidance for educators and assessment designers integrating mobile-based tools into EFL learning

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study analyzes the portrayal of the American Dream through Anthony Patch in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Beautiful and the Damned. Set in the Jazz Age, a time of excess and cultural change, the novel exposes how materialism, social pressure, and moral decay corrupt the ideal of success. Using textual analysis and a sociocultural literary approach, the study examines Anthony’s pursuit of wealth and status without ethical foundation, leading to his downfall. The findings reveal how society and Gloria Gilbert influence Anthony’s values, showing his gradual disillusionment with the American Dream. This research contributes to cultural criticism of early 20th-century American literature and underscores the continued relevance of Fitzgerald’s critique in today’s consumer-oriented world
