Abstract

Amorphous carbon (a-C) film provides potential ability as an i-type layer in semiconductor material for photovoltaic purposes due to its tunable properties. Here, we investigate how to get the deposition rate estimation of the thickness and homogenous surface of a-C film as an i-type in solar cell applications. The a-C was prepared from palmyra liquid sugar using nebulizer as a nanospray method. The thick palmyra liquid sugar was carbonized at 250 C for 2.5 hours then continued at 300 C for 2 hours to obtain high-carbon charcoal. The thickness was examined using a SEM cross section, and the amorphous phase was measured using XRD. The amorphous characteristic of a-C is confirmed by broad peaks in XRD patterns. The thickness of a-C films was found to be thinner than in a previous study that used a similar materials and methods but different equipment in the deposition process. The average thickness of a-C films is in the range of 200 to 450 nm, followed by an increase in the deposition time of 5 to 25 s. By these value, the deposition rate estimation was obtained using extrapolation linier method from the SEM result around 11.62 nm/s. This result can be used as a reference to make various thicknesses for the i-layer in order to find the maximum thickness that gives high efficiency to amorphous carbon film.

Abstract

Titanium dioxide, or TiO2 is a semiconductor material with many advanced applications, such as photocatalysts. Generally, TiO2 has three primary forms of crystal structure: anatase, brookite, and rutile. Among these types of crystal structures, anatase has good properties in photocatalysts application due to its band gap value (3.20eV) and stability. Further, there are many methods to synthesize TiO2, such as sol-gel, hydrothermal method, etc. Still, the copreciptation method has a suitable method because it is easy to produce, high pure product and low cost. However, many parameters control the quality of TiO2 itself: pH, temperature, time and mechanical process. Especially for the mechanical process, no results were reported about structure identification of TiO2 at mixing time below 25 hours. In this research, titanium dioxide (TiO2) powder has been investigated using coprecipitation method and TiCl3 as a raw material. The TiO2 was synthesized by mixing the time duration at 5, 10 and 25 hours in this method. Analysis using x-ray diffraction shows that all the samples have an anatase phase. Further, Rietveld refinement analysis shows that mixing duration time does not significantly affect the lattice parameters.

Abstract

This report is briefly investigating the structural defect information of T’-Pr2-xCexCuO4 (T’-PCCO) nanocrystals with x = 0.13 at three different calcination temperatures. The as-synthesized powder of Pr2-xCexCuO4 (PCCO) nanocrystals with x = 0.13 were synthesized by using the chemically dissolved method within three different calcination temperatures, namely 900oC, 950oC, and 1000oC for 15 h in air. X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique is used to characterize the phase, structural, and crystalline defect information on the nanocrystal powder. It is found that all the indexed peaks are confirmed as PCCO phase with space group of I4/mmm and a minor impurity of Fm-3m space group. The lattice parameters are confirmed to be fluctuated signifying the stability of the Coulomb force at those temperatures. The post-Rietveld analysis using Bond Valance Sum (BVS) calculation shows the Ce-dependent of T’-PCCO nanocrystals while the Fourier difference suggests that the created crystalline defect as a part of the tetravalent doping effect which binds stronger apical oxygen. Moreover, at Pr- and Cu-site, the scattering distribution are fluctuating with the stable structure at 1000oC. This initial structural information is worth complementing the fundamental feature for understanding the T’-type cuprates.

Abstract

Abstract

We have processed biomass from palmyra sugar to produce allotrope carbon by heating process with the variation of calcination temperature. The formation of amorphous carbon (a-C) was confirmed from the XRD result heated at 400°C with the observation of the peak at the position of ~24o. By increasing the temperature at 700°C, the presence of two peaks at 24o and 43o were observed, indicating the formation of rGO-like phase. The functional groups detected by FTIR spectra consist of C=C, C-O, C=O, C-H and O-H. The result of conductivity measurement exhibits that the material can be classified as semiconducting materials.

Abstract

A large eruption of Mount Gamalama happened nearly 350 years ago has left the frozen lava rocks that are now spread in the form of black stone located in the North-East coast of the island of Ternate, called batu angus (Angus stone). This paper reports the basic analysis including the phase content, crystal structure and particle morphology of the frozen lava rock, Angus stone, briefly. Based on the XRD pattern, Angus stone contains up to 20% of magnetic phases. The analysis of XRF and XRD data reveals that there are dominantly non-magnetic phases (silicate phases) in the Angus stone with the combination of Si-Al-K-Ca-O elements. Elemental distribution map from SEM/EDX image shows that there is a clear separation between non-magnetic and magnetic phases in the crushed powders indicating the easiness to obtain both phases separately. This study proves that Angus stone has potential application as a base material for the preparation of magnetic and non-magnetic functional materials.
