Abstract

Al-Tanwīr Sharḥ al-Jāmi‘ al-Ṣaghīr book by Muhammad bin Isma’il Al-San’ani, is one of the important books of hadith syarah to be studied. The book, which is the Sharḥ al-Jāmi‘ al-Ṣaghīr by Al-Suyuthi, has a peculiarity compared to other similar books, like a Faiḍ Al-Qadīr Sharḥ al-Jāmi‘ al-Ṣaghīr by Syams al-Din Muhammad bin Zaid Ad-dīn, and Al-Istidrāk An-naẓīr ‘ala Al-Jāmi’ Al-Ṣaghīr by Syaikh Syihab Al-dīn Abi Al ‘Abbas Ahmad bin Muhammad al-matbūlī al-Syāfi’i. In this article, the problem studied is the method of syarah Al-San’ani through the analysis of the book of Al-Tanwīr. The problem is studied by descriptive analysis of analysis, namely by explaining important points in this book, then analyzing so as to produce conclusions in the form of methods in this book. The results of the study show that the book of Al-Tanwīr: (1) was conducted using the taḥlīlī method, that is, by expounding the matan hadith and giving syakl information to the matan hadith, then analyzing sentences, a few words, or even a word if that is possible to do sharḥ. (2) In modern academia, this method of writing books can be called descriptive-comparative-analysis. (3) The method of compiling this book is based on the order of the mu'jam letters (Alif, hamzah, ba, ta, tsa, and so on).

Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of the meaning of "al-ma’ṣiyyah" within the hadith commentary text "al-īmān yazīd wa yanquṣ, yazīd bi al-ṭō’ah wa yanquṣ bi al-ma’ṣiyyah" using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory. Generally, the term "al-ma’ṣiyyah" is interpreted as the act of violating a command; in the context of Islamic studies, the command violated is specifically that of Allah. However, when "al-ma’ṣiyyah" is interpreted using a different approach—specifically Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory—its meaning undergoes a shift. This research employs a qualitative method, utilizing the Kutub al-Tis’ah and their commentaries (syarah) as the primary sources for the hadith, and the Collected Papers of Charles Sanders Peirce as the primary reference for the semiotic theory. The discussion in this study covers: 1) The commentary on the hadith regarding the fluctuation of faith; 2) The interpretation of the meaning of maksiat within the context of faith fluctuation; and 3) The hadith regarding the loss of one’s faith. The results indicate that: 1) The text "al-īmān yazīd wa yanquṣ, yazīd bi al-ṭō’ah wa yanquṣ bi al-ma’ṣiyyah" serves as a commentary on the hadith concerning the many branches of faith; 2) The meaning of maksiat in this commentary shifts from "violating a command" to "abandoning sunnah (recommended) acts"; and 3) The hadith regarding the loss of faith explains that a believer who commits adultery, becomes intoxicated, or steals is not considered to possess faith at the moment these acts are committed.
