Abstract

This community service initiative was designed to empower communities by providing training on converting vegetable waste into eco-enzyme as a solution for sustainable household waste management. The program adopted a participatory method involving awareness sessions, practical workshops, and ongoing assistance. Participants were introduced to material preparation, fermentation techniques, and the utilization of eco-enzyme as an eco-friendly cleaning solution and liquid fertilizer. The outcomes indicated a significant increase in participants’ understanding and practical skills in managing organic waste, along with heightened environmental awareness. Furthermore, the program fostered positive behavioral changes in reducing household organic waste and promoted the adoption of simple and affordable sustainable practices. Hence, eco-enzyme production represents a practical community-based approach to improving sustainable household waste management.

Abstract

This community service program focused on implementing a web-based digital information system for recording Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) production among oil palm farmer groups in Kuala Bali Village, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra. The program aimed to improve production data management, reduce errors caused by manual recording, and strengthen farmers’ digital literacy in managing agricultural production data. The implementation method applied a participatory approach consisting of needs assessment, system design, system testing, user training, assisted data entry, and system utilization evaluation. The developed system provided features for farmer data management, plantation block records, harvest input, production history, automated revenue calculation, reporting, and data export. The implementation results showed that the system helped farmers organize production records more systematically, simplified data retrieval, accelerated report preparation, and improved participants’ understanding of digital-based production administration. Training and mentoring activities also encouraged the formation of local data operators within the farmer group to support the sustainability of system utilization. However, challenges related to digital literacy and internet accessibility in rural areas remain important considerations for future development. Further system development may include fertilization records, plantation maintenance, and productivity monitoring features to support more comprehensive plantation management.
