Biodiversitas 20: 1524-1536. Based on data from various environmental studies at the Upper Cisokan Pumped Storage (UCPS) Hydropower plan area, further studies need to be carried out that can provide clearer guidance on how to protect and restore the environment (including habitat) around the UCPS, protect, and manage the endangered biodiversity through adaptive approaches and ecosystem management. One of these studies was the UCPS Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP). The aim of this study was to identify the strategy for biodiversity management at the project site. Methods of this study were based on several years of qualitative and descriptive-analytical studies, which updated information from earlier studies. Information on the area’s biodiversity was obtained directly through field surveys and indirectly through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions (FGD) with local community members and other stakeholders in the area. This article presents the strategy for biodiversity management at project site, including minimizing habitat gap and habitat loss; expanding and enriching habitats; making corridors; protecting the natural forests (protection of remnant forest); controlling access; managing fire, the impact of traffic on native fauna, land clearing and human-wildlife conflict; minimizing impacts to biodiversity,  particularly threatened species; integrating management with adjoining land managers (PLN, perhutani, the community); strengthening capacities for integrating and institutionalizing biodiversity conservation and management; conducting campaign for biodiversity awareness, communication, and education; and developing value-added products and alternative sustainable livelihood for bio-resource-dependent communities. Biodiversitas 20: 1281-1288.  Most species on Java, Indonesia are ecologically associated with or dependent on forests, the island’s high deforestation rates are a major threat to its species. Until now, various efforts to conserve mammals are still focused on natural ecosystems, such as forests. There has not been much research on mammals carried out specifically in non-conservation forest areas, whereas many regions in Indonesia have extensive community lands in the landscape and are directed to be areas that have a conservation function, besides still functioning as a production system. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the diversity of mammals that are still found in Cisokan especially those that have high conservation status and their habitat. Combination of several research methods applied, such as semi-structured interview, sign survey, direct observation, camera trapping, and collapsible trap. Mammalian diversity in the Cisokan forest patched is found in 26 species and among them are endangered species, such as Javan Leopard, Pangolin, and Slow Loris. These three species occupy diverse land cover from natural forest to human lands, such as production forests, settlements, rice fields, and agroforestry or mixed gardens. The existence of these species on human land has the potential for human-wildlife conflict, so it needs to be studied further in wildlife management in Cisokan.

Abstract. Wulandari I, Shanida  SS, Husodo T, Megantara EN, Tresna D. 2019. Animal utilization based on local knowledge in Ciletuh Geopark, Ciemas Subdistrict, Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2781-2789. Ciletuh Geopark has high biodiversity but has not been supported by local knowledge about the use of animals to support sustainable development. This study aims to investigate: (i) the number of species that are used, (ii) distribution of local knowledge about animals using, and (iii) the dependency of communities on creatures in Ciletuh Geopark, Ciemas Subdistrict, Sukabumi. Mixed methods of qualitative (semi-structured interviews) and quantitative methods (proportional random sampling) were applied in this study. The community uses 153 species, consisting 58 Avifauna species, 13 mammals species, nine Herpetofauna species, three insects species, 16 species of freshwater fish, 43 species of seawater fish, two Mollusca species, and nine crustacean species. Utilization of fauna is not distributed in each village. Animals using of Avifauna, Herpetofauna, insects, and mammals tend to be utilized by people of Girimukti Village. Seawater fish, Mollusca, and crustaceans tend to be utilized by Ciwaru Village, while freshwater fish tend to be used in each village, except Girimukti and Cibenda Village. Utilization of fauna in Ciemas Subdistrict has begun to be abandoned, although several people still use them.

Avian diversity in geothermal power plant areas: Case studies in Kamojang, Darajat, and Gunung Salak, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1049-1059. Land cover changes that occur in the development of industrial areas have impact on the quality of biophysical and socio-economic environments. This study aimed to investigate the diversity of birds (avifauna) in three geothermal power plant areas in West Jawa Province, Indonesia (i.e., Kamojang, Darajat, and Gunung Salak). Transect and spotlighting methods were conducted in this study. We found that areas around geothermal power plant in Gunung Salak had the highest diversity of bird species with 105 species from 43 families, followed by Kamojang with 82 species from 34 families, and Darajat with 80 species from 40 families. In total, there were 134 species from 51 families in which two species are Endangered (EN) under the IUCN Red List category, five are endemic to Java, 11 are protected by CITES Appendix II and 14 are protected by national regulations. The presence of some birds was an indicator of ecosystem condition and functioning, including indicator of food chain, quality of water, quality of natural habitat, condition of riparian habitat, and the condition of open or disturbed habitat. Some birds were also associated with particular habitats, such as natural forests, riparians, a combination of natural forests and open habitats, tea plantations, and craters. The results of this study can be used as baseline information about the state of the surrounding environment in the three geothermal power plant areas and as a reference in biodiversity management in the future.

Biodiversitas 22: 4308-4319. The herpetofauna discovery in West Java is still low and has not yet described the herpetofauna community's species diversity entirely and thoroughly in West Java. It experiences high anthropogenic impacts both from infrastructure and tourism activities. If left further, herpetofauna species will become extinct locally because of anthropogenic factors. Therefore, it is essential to reveal the diversity and distribution of herpetofauna species. This study aimed to show diversity and distribution based on the elevational range in West Java. Visual Encounter Survey in combination with the Auditory Encounter Survey was applied in this study. We found 74 species where the Colubridae family were found most commonly in the study sites. Of 74 species, four species have high conservation status, including Rhacophorus reinwardtii, Ophiophagus hannah, Varanus salvator, and Malayopython reticulatus. Besides, ten species were found to be endemic to Java and Java-Bali. Based on elevation, herpetofauna is mainly located at elevations < 1000 m asl. The higher the height, the fewer the number of species found. In Amphibians, the highest number of species tend to be found at 400-1200 m asl and 1400-1700 m asl, while reptiles tend to be located at 400-900 m asl. Keywords: Auditory Encounter Survey, West Java

Population and distribution of some herons in Babakan Rancabayawak, Bandung City, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 5389-5396. The Cinambo River flood control channel in the Rancabayawak impacts the decline in the habitat quality of some herons, such as cattle egret [Bubulcus ibis (Linnaeus, 1758)], little egret [Egretta garzetta (Linnaeus, 1766)], and Javan pond-heron [Ardeola speciosa (Horsfield, 1821)]. Besides, many built-up areas due to the urbanization in peri-urban areas also impact habitat quality, such as the loss of plants commonly used as perching and nesting sites. Along with the development of Rancabayawak as a built-up area, it is essential to study the management of those birds. This study aims to reveal: 1) plants used as perching and nesting sites, 2) population size and distribution, and management efforts on B. ibis, E. garzetta, and A. speciosa in Babakan Rancabayawak Hamlet, Gedebage Subdistrict, Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. A mixed-methods approach was applied in this study by calculating the estimated population and bird nests, plant inventory survey, and the installation of the A8 mini GPS. Bambusa vulgaris, Leucaena leucocephala, and Mimosa pigra are plants that are used as perching and nesting sites by B. ibis, E. garzetta, and A. speciosa. The estimated population mean of those birds was 630 individuals, 92 individuals, and 43 individuals, respectively, with the population average of those birds, is 1680 individuals. Three hundred twenty-nine nests (329) were found during the study. Based on distribution mapping, birds moved east and south, covering paddy fields in Rancaekek, Solokanjeruk, and Majalaya within a radius of 12 km. Management efforts can be conducted by not cutting down the plants that become nesting and perching sites and maintaining the wetlands in their habitats.
