Global warming, driven by various anthropogenic activities, leads to an increase in earth’s surface temperatures, exerting a profound influence on global climate patterns. This phenomenon significantly impacts the growth patterns of various plant species, including Casuarina equisetifolia L., commonly known as sea cypress, and Casuarina junghuhniana Miq., referred to as mountain cypress. The primary objective of this study is to assess the potential repercussions of climate change on the distribution of these two species within Southeast Asia. To achieve this goal, the study utilized the MaxEnt modeling approach, incorporating key factors such as bioclimatic conditions, soil characteristics (edaphic factors), and UV radiation levels. Present study considered three distinct time intervals (2030, 2050, and 2080) while exploring four diverse climate change scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5, RCP 6.0, and RCP 8.5). The findings of this investigation reveal that both C. equisetifolia and C. junghuhniana are susceptible to alterations in the extent of suitable habitat distribution, which result in shifts in their geographic ranges due to evolving climatic conditions. Initially, the habitat distribution encompassed an area of only 652,819 km2, accounting for 15.65% of the suitable habitat for C. equisetifolia, and 30,132 km2, representing 0.7% of the suitable habitat for C. junghuhniana. However, by the year 2080, the habitat range for C. equisetifolia is projected to expand significantly to cover 755,082 km2 (18%) under the RCP 4.5 scenario. In contrast, C. junghuhniana is expected to experience a notable reduction, with its suitable habitat shrinking to 25,332 km2 (0.6%) under the influence of RCP 8.5. Notably, these shifts are characterized by a southeastward migration of C. equisetifolia towards Indonesian Borneo from Malaysian-Indonesian border and an eastward shift of C. junghuhniana towards the east of Sulawesi from the Gulf of Bone. These findings highlight the dynamic nature of species distributions in response to changing climatic conditions, emphasizing the need for proactive conservation efforts and adaptive management strategies to mitigate potential ecological impacts.

Agroforestry suitability evaluation using remote sensing in Jatiyoso Sub-district, Karanganyar District, Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 6761-6769. Agroforestry systems are critical for biodiversity conservation, land degradation mitigation, and climate change mitigation. This agroforestry approach reduces forest degradation, boosts food security, and gradually raises farmers' income. This study uses remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) modeling tools to analyze land potential and agroforestry status in Jatiyoso Sub-district, Karanganyar District, Central Java, Indonesia. The data used in the analysis support data for soil fertility index, rainfall, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) satellite image data, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Modeling was done by integrating various thematic layers in the GIS domain. Weighting was also carried out in the analysis of land suitability. The mapping results in Jatiyoso Sub-district, Karanganyar District, showed that 18.1% (13.49 km2) had high potential as agroforestry areas, 54.9% (40.95 km2) had medium potential, and 27% (20.18 km2) had low potential. As a result, using remote sensing and GIS to determine suitable land for agroforestry could significantly impact the community, particularly farmers, landowners, and foresters, in the decision-making process for developing agroforestry systems and practices and estimating important productivity indicators. The most promising and appropriate agroforestry plants developed in Jatiyoso Sub-district are medicinal plants, but agricultural commodities like cloves, bananas, and vegetables are also present.

The diversity of wild edible plants used by community living around Mount Merapi National Park, Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 3041-3049. Mount Merapi National Park is one of the conservation areas in Indonesia that serves as habitat for various species of wild plants with ecological value and social benefits for local communities. However, the impacts of social, economic, and environmental changes have led to a decline in community interest in utilizing the presence of wild plants there. This research aims to document the diversity of wild edible plants used by local community living around Mount Merapi National Park in Kemalang Sub-district, Klaten District, Central Java, Indonesia. Data collection involved physical observation and semi-structured questionnaires to 58 respondents. Data analysis was carried out by classifying plants based on their local names, families, scientific names, growth forms, parts utilized, uses, and conservation status. This study documented 45 species of wild edible plants belonging to 32 families with the dominance of the Zingiberaceae family. Wild edible plants are utilized as food sources, cooking ingredients, and traditional medicine with leaves being the most commonly utilized part. Andrographis paniculata is most frequently utilized by the community. Based on the IUCN Red List, there are 20 wild edible species categorized as Least Concern, 13 species Not Evaluated, 11 species Data Deficient, and 1 species Endangered.
