Abstract

The limited understanding of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) approach among elementary school teachers poses a challenge in creating innovative and meaningful learning. This study aims to describe elementary school teachers’ knowledge of STEM and the factors influencing it based on teacher status. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach with a sample of 60 teachers, consisting of 30 guru penggerak and 30 guru non-penggerak, selected using multistage sampling and stratified random sampling techniques. Data were collected through knowledge tests and questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results show that elementary school teachers’ knowledge of STEM in Buleleng District is at a moderate level, with average scores of 58% for guru penggerak and 44% for guru non-penggerak, while the main factors influencing their knowledge are learning motivation (78%), personal experience (71.5%), and level of education (68.4%). The study concludes that efforts to enhance teachers’ STEM capacity need to be carried out evenly, regardless of teacher status. The implication is that schools and policymakers should provide continuous training, adequate facilities, and learning support to strengthen elementary school teachers’ STEM competencies.

Abstract

This research is driven by the significant barriers deaf students face in understanding abstract science terminology and the lack of sign language-based learning resources. The primary objective of this study is to design the interface, analyze the level of content validity, and analyze user responses to the SIBIPA website as a translation tool for Grade IV Science terminology. The research method employed is Research and Development (R&D) using the ADDIE model development design. Research subjects involved two content experts, two media experts, three educational practitioners, and nine deaf students. Data were collected via validation sheets and questionnaires, then analyzed using the Gregory technique and descriptive percentage statistics. Results indicate that the SIBIPA website possesses very high content validity, achieving a Gregory coefficient of 1.00. Practicality levels based on teacher responses reached 95.8% and student responses reached 96.3%, both categorized as very practical. The implication of these findings is the provision of adaptive visual information accessibility to support science literacy for deaf students in inclusive environments. In conclusion, the SIBIPA website is a valid and highly practical learning resource innovation for facilitating the understanding of science concepts in elementary education.

Abstract

Science learning in elementary schools is hindered by the limited availability of engaging, relevant, and bilingual learning resources, resulting in less optimal understanding of science concepts and English skills. This study aims to: a) describe the characteristics of Elementary School Science Content-Oriented Bilingual Picture Story Books needed by students, b) produce their design, c) test their validity, and d) test their practicality. The study employed the ADDIE model—analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation—with data collected through interviews, observations, and questionnaires, and analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. Validity testing yielded scores of 0.94 from material and media experts, and 0.95 from language experts, all in the “very high” category. Practicality testing showed teacher response scores of 91.11% and student responses of 96.50%, both categorized as “very good.” The findings indicate that the book is feasible and practical for use as a science learning resource. Its implication is the potential to enhance science learning and improve students’ English skills, provided teachers adapt its use to students’ characteristics and abilities to ensure optimal learning outcomes.
