Abstract

Tanning of tilapia fish skin (Oreochromis niloticus) has been carried out using a variety of pretanning materials such as aluminum, chrome, glutaraldehyde, syntan with gambier (Uncaria gambier) as the main tanning agent. The research aims to determine the effect of pretanning ingredients on the physical and chemical quality of the skin tilapia fish of gambir so that the best formulation can be obtained. The process of tanning tilapia skin is carried out conventionally from salt-cured tilapia skin processed by BHO to the pikling process, pretanning with a variety of pretanning materials chrome, aluminum, glutaraldehyde and SB sodatan at 4% each, followed by main tanning with gambier various (25% 30%, 35%), post tanning, and finishing. The results of the skin quality test of tilapia fish tanned gambier with the best formula, namely code L with SB 4% sodatan pretanning with 35% gambier. This optimum formula produces a shrinkage temperature of 70 oC, higher tensile strength, sewing strength and burst resistance, the highest bound tannin content is 30.87%, and the degree of tanning is 69.18%.

Abstract

Location and mechanism of leather storage that is not ideal can cause changes in the character of the old stock leather. One of the effects that is often found when storing finished leather is reducing skin softness. The conventional method of increasing leather softness of old stock is through a mechanical staking process. Staking will only be effective in softening the leather if the leather has enough oil content, if it doesn't have enough oil content it will potentially cause cracks in the grain. In this study, control leather (K) was only given mechanical treatment. Meanwhile, for treatment leather (T), the mechanical process is carried out before and after adding mayonnaise oil using a rubbing method on the flesh to maximize the oil lubrication effect on old stock leather. The use of anionic oil, mayonnaise oil, which is applied to the flesh of the skin using the wiping method on T skin, produces a higher difference in the increase in softness, namely 0.5 mm, when compared to K leather which only undergoes a mechanical process (staking and toggling), namely 0.3 mm. This shows that the addition of mayonnaise oil and emulsifier to the flesh is able to re-lubricate the leather fibers thereby increasing skin laxity.

Abstract

Leather upholstery must have good rub resistance, adhesion, and flexing resistance to be able for a long time. This study aims to determine the correct amount of cross linker use to obtain the good rub resistance, adhesion, and flexing resistance upholstery of the leather upholstery finishing coat. Crust leather, adhesive solvent, diluent solvent, penetrator, medium light polyurethane, light polyurethane, aliphatic polyurethane, cross linker, spray gun, flex meter, rubbing fastness tester, and grey scale are used as material. Upholstery leather finishing consist of base, medium and top coat. The method is addition of 2, 3, and 4% cross linker from the total of top coat composition. The result of wet rubbing resistance test are very faded (value=1) when using 2% cross linker, medium faded (value=3) when using 3% cross linker, very no faded (value=5) when using 4% cross linker. The dry rubbing resistance of each treatment showed no difference. Adhesion value (≤12.0 N) and flexing resistance (no crack) for all treatment met the requirement. It can be concluded that the use of a cross linker of 4% in the top coat finishing produces the best test value.
