Abstract

Background: Anemia remains a major health problem among adolescent girls. Although the distribution of iron tablets continues to expand, adherence remains low due to forgetfulness, lack of motivation, and insufficient monitoring. The FeUP (Fe uptake package) Box is an integrated adherence support intervention that combines a pill box, educational and instruction cards, a self monitoring card, and parental involvement to simultaneously address these barriers and improve adherence to iron tablet intake. Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of the FeUP box in improving adherence to iron tablet intake among adolescent girls with anemia. Method: A quasi-experimental study was conducted using a nonequivalent control group with a pretest–posttest design. Participants were selected through purposive sampling from SMPN 29 Bandung, within the Ledeng Community Health Center service area, and SMPN 2 Parongpong, within the Ciwaruga Community Health Center service area. The sample consisted of 52 adolescent girls diagnosed with anemia, divided equally into an intervention group (n = 26) and a control group (n = 26). Adherence to iron tablet consumption was assessed using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8). The intervention group received FeUP Box educational materials for four weeks, while the control group followed the school’s standard iron supplementation program without additional education. Data analysis employed the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test to examine within-group changes in adherence and the Mann-Whitney U Test to compare adherence outcomes between the intervention and control groups. Results: Adherence scores in the intervention group increased from 3.57 ± 1.37 (95% CI: 3.01–4.12) to 5.25 ± 1.23 (95% CI: 4.75–5.75) after the intervention, with a significant improvement (p < 0.001; r = 0.692). In contrast, no significant change was observed in the control group, with adherence scores changing from 3.04 ± 1.46 (95% CI: 2.45–3.63) to 2.86 ± 1.33 (95% CI: 2.32–3.39) (p = 0.317; r = 0.196). The increase in adherence scores was significantly greater in the intervention group than in the control group (p < 0.001; r = 0.585). As a supporting objective measure, hemoglobin levels in the intervention group showed an upward trend after the intervention; however, the increase was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The FeUP box effectively improved adherence to iron tablet intake among adolescent girls with anemia. Integrating the FeUP box into school-based iron supplementation programs may provide a practical strategy to strengthen adherence and support anemia prevention among adolescent girls.

Abstract

Background: Introduction: Academic stress is a common problem among healthcare students and is associated with increased emotional eating as a maladaptive coping mechanism. Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is known to have anxiolytic and appetite-regulating effects through neurotransmitter modulation. Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of saffron capsules in controlling emotional eating due to academic stress in healthcare students. Method: A quasi-experimental study with a non-randomized pretest-posttest control group was conducted on 34 healthcare students (nursing, medicine, and nutrition) who were assigned to saffron (100 mg/day) and vitamin C (500 mg/day) for three weeks. Measurements were made using the Perceived Academic Stress Scale (PASS) and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire–Emotional Eating (DEBQ-E). Analysis used paired-sample t-tests and independent-sample t-tests (p<0.05). Results: Both groups showed a significant decrease in PASS and DEBQ-E scores after the intervention (p<0.05). Descriptively, the reduction in emotional eating was greater in the saffron group (Δ=7.176) than in the vitamin C group (Δ=4.824), while the reduction in academic stress was greater in the vitamin C group (Δ=2.353) than in the saffron group (Δ=1.000). However, an independent t-test showed no significant differences between the groups in PASS or DEBQ-E scores (p>0.05). Conclusion: Saffron capsules have the potential to help reduce emotional eating and academic stress in healthcare students, although they did not show a significant difference in effectiveness compared to vitamin C. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to strengthen these findings.

Abstract

Background: Anxiety in third-trimester pregnant women is a common psychological problem, often related to the birthing process and bodily changes. Various non-pharmacological approaches have been shown to be effective in reducing anxiety, one of which is prenatal yoga. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of augmented reality-based prenatal yoga on anxiety levels in third-trimester pregnant women. Method: This study used a pre-experimental design with a single-group pretest-posttest. The study was conducted at the Cibiru Hilir Community Health Center (UPTD) in Bandung Regency. A sample of 23 third-trimester pregnant women was selected using a purposive sampling technique. The intervention was conducted twice a week for two weeks, and anxiety levels were measured using the Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Questionnaire-Revised (PRAQ-R). Results: There was a significant reduction in anxiety levels in pregnant women after participating in the augmented reality-based prenatal yoga intervention. The p-value obtained was 0.001 (<0.05), indicating that the difference between pre-test and post-test was statistically significant, with a Cohen's d value of 0.801, indicating a very large effect. Conclusion: An augmented reality-based prenatal yoga intervention is effective in reducing anxiety in pregnant women in the third trimester. Augmented reality technology can be an innovative approach to support the implementation of prenatal yoga as a non-pharmacological intervention for managing anxiety during pregnancy. Suggestion: Further research with a more robust design, such as a control/comparison group with a larger sample size, is needed to confirm its long-term effectiveness and consider other factors influencing maternal anxiety.   Keywords: Anxiety; Augmented Reality (AR); Pregnant Women; Prenatal Yoga; Third Trimester.
