Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the representation of divinity in Erna Suminar’s Sufi poems Mahakarya Ilahi, Pesan Rahasia, and Karena Engkau using Roland Barthes’ semiotic perspective. The research is motivated by the importance of understanding how religious and spiritual meanings are constructed through poetic symbols in contemporary Indonesian literature. The objective of this study is to describe the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings that construct representations of God in the selected poems. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The data source was Pertemuan Antologi Puisi Sufistik by Erna Suminar, while the data consisted of words, phrases, and poetic expressions containing signs related to divinity. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed through the stages of denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings reveal that the representation of divinity is constructed through various symbolic systems. In Mahakarya Ilahi, God is represented as the Creator and the source of human existence through artistic symbols. In Pesan Rahasia, God is portrayed as a refuge, a source of inner peace, and the destination of spiritual longing through symbols of secrecy and communication. In Karena Engkau, God is represented as the source of beauty, compassion, and power manifested through nature and human spiritual experiences. At the mythical level, the three poems construct the belief that humans can discover meaning, peace, and spiritual awareness through their relationship with God. These findings demonstrate that divinity in Erna Suminar’s poetry is represented as the center of existence, spirituality, and human life.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and interpret the meaning of love in the poems "Namamu," "Kesaksian," and "Cita-Cita Rindu" from the poetry anthology Asmaraloka by Usman Arrumy using Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutic approach. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a hermeneutic framework. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques, focusing on symbols, diction, and imagery that represent the concept of love in the selected poems. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of reading, understanding, explaining, and interpreting texts according to Ricoeur’s hermeneutic theory. The findings reveal that love is represented through three interconnected constructions of meaning: existential longing, total devotion, and spiritual self-learning. In the poem "Namamu," love is interpreted as existential longing expressed through the symbols of name, rain, time, and yearning. In "Kesaksian," love is represented as total devotion involving the whole human existence through bodily symbols and active diction. Meanwhile, "Cita-Cita Rindu" portrays love as an inner learning process symbolized by the figure of a teacher and the transformative function of longing. These findings indicate that love in Arrumy’s poetry extends beyond romantic relationships and encompasses emotional, existential, and spiritual dimensions. This study contributes to contemporary Indonesian literary studies by demonstrating the relevance of Ricoeur’s hermeneutics in uncovering deeper layers of meaning within poetic texts.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of longing in three selected poems from Buah Rindu by Amir Hamzah (Cempaka, Buah Rindu, and Sunyi) using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling, the analysis focuses on the structural relationship between the signifier, represented by the linguistic forms of the poems, and the signified, represented by the underlying concepts of meaning, to reveal the multilayered dimensions of longing embedded in the texts. The findings demonstrate that Amir Hamzah does not construct longing as a single or homogeneous concept. Instead, the sign system in the three poems operates within two interconnected domains: emotional longing rooted in human relationships and spiritual longing reflecting a Sufi aspiration toward God. In Cempaka, the cempaka flower functions as a signifier of sensual and romantic longing directed toward a beloved. In Buah Rindu, the figures of the mother and the moment of birth at dawn serve as signifiers that extend beyond familial affection to symbolize humanity's sacred origin (fitrah) and the soul's yearning to return to the Creator. In Sunyi, the physical presence of the beloved, which fails to alleviate the lyrical speaker's inner emptiness, marks the point at which human love transforms into transcendental solitude. These findings provide a new analytical perspective on the application of Saussurean semiotics to modern Indonesian Sufi poetry and demonstrate that Buah Rindu should not be interpreted merely as a collection of romantic and melancholic poems, but as a sophisticated system of signs encoding the spiritual anxiety and existential longing of the human soul.
