Abstract

This article explains the collective memory of the Mandar community regarding the figure of To Salama’, Kahar Muzakkar. The study focuses on the experiences of three informants, namely Bapak Dadi Majid, Bapak Abdul Talib, and Bapak Ilham Sofi, who gained knowledge about the events through stories told by parents and the community. Using a qualitative historical approach, this research examines how memories of Kahar Muzakkar are formed within the social life of the Mandar community. The findings show that the community’s collective memory is diverse. Kahar Muzakkar is remembered both as a resistance figure and as a source of fear due to the conflict between guerrilla forces and the government military. In addition, oral traditions and local beliefs, particularly the concept of “To Salama’,” play an important role in shaping public perceptions and preserving historical memory across generations within the Mandar community.
