Abstract

This study aims to describe the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the storytelling method to improve speaking skills of Grade X students of SMAN 13 Takalar. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, with each cycle comprising planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 30 Grade X-5 (Samratu Langi) students of SMAN 13 Takalar. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and a speaking skills assessment rubric covering five aspects: diction, intonation, expression and gestures, fluency, and self-confidence, using a 1–4 scale. Data were analyzed descriptively qualitatively for observation and interview results, and quantitatively for the rubric scores. Results showed significant improvement across all aspects from Cycle I to Cycle II: diction increased 20% (74% to 94%), intonation 19% (75% to 94%), expression and gestures 20% (73% to 93%), fluency 22% (73% to 95%), and self-confidence 20% (73% to 93%). The overall average improved from 74% (fair) in Cycle I to 94% (very good) in Cycle II, an increase of 20%. The storytelling method proved effective in comprehensively improving students' speaking skills by developing linguistic (diction, intonation), paralinguistic (expression, gestures, fluency), and affective (self-confidence) aspects simultaneously.
