Abstract

This research aims to describe the forms of deixis namely personal deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis used in the novel Perang by Rama Wirawan. This thesis is a literary study employing a pragmatic approach. The type of research used is qualitative, with the method applied being descriptive qualitative. The data collection techniques include reading, note-taking, and documentation. The data were analyzed through the stages of identification, classification, and description of words, phrases, or sentences containing deixis elements found in the novel. To ensure data validity, this study applies theory triangulation. The results of the study show that several types of deixis are found in the novel Perang by Rama Wirawan, namely personal deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. Personal deixis is the most dominant type because it illustrates the relationship between the speaker, the addressee, and a third party in the utterances. Meanwhile, spatial, temporal, discourse, and social deixis play important roles in constructing the unity of meaning, characters, setting, plot, and social relationships among the characters in the story.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the storytelling method to improve speaking skills of Grade X students of SMAN 13 Takalar. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, with each cycle comprising planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 30 Grade X-5 (Samratu Langi) students of SMAN 13 Takalar. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and a speaking skills assessment rubric covering five aspects: diction, intonation, expression and gestures, fluency, and self-confidence, using a 1–4 scale. Data were analyzed descriptively qualitatively for observation and interview results, and quantitatively for the rubric scores. Results showed significant improvement across all aspects from Cycle I to Cycle II: diction increased 20% (74% to 94%), intonation 19% (75% to 94%), expression and gestures 20% (73% to 93%), fluency 22% (73% to 95%), and self-confidence 20% (73% to 93%). The overall average improved from 74% (fair) in Cycle I to 94% (very good) in Cycle II, an increase of 20%. The storytelling method proved effective in comprehensively improving students' speaking skills by developing linguistic (diction, intonation), paralinguistic (expression, gestures, fluency), and affective (self-confidence) aspects simultaneously.

The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles based on the Kemmis and McTaggart spiral model, covering the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects were 26 students, with data collected through writing tests and classroom observation and analyzed qualitatively. The results show that Discovery Learning significantly improved students’ writing skills. In the pre-cycle, the average score was 68, with only 27% of students reaching the minimum mastery criterion (KKM ≥ 75). After Cycle I, the average score rose to 80, with 81% of students achieving mastery, and in Cycle II it reached 88, with all students (100%) meeting the standard. The greatest improvement occurred in the completeness of the 5W+1H elements, followed by gains in text structure, linguistic rules, and news content.
