Abstract

The thrifting phenomenon at Pasar Lereng Bukittinggi has undergone a shift in meaning, from a mere economic solution to a lifestyle representing the social identity and creativity of young people. This study aims to analyze fashion motivation and consumer satisfaction among youth (specifically university students and Gen Z) through second-hand clothing consumption. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with six informants, including traders and active consumers. The analysis employed three Contemporary Anthropology theories: Georg Simmel's Fashion theory to dissect identity motivation, Arjun Appadurai’s "Social Life of Things" to examine the re-commodification process of second-hand goods, and Daniel Miller’s Materiality theory to understand the impact of consumption on psychological wellbeing. The results indicate that thrifting serves as a means for young people to balance the desire for uniqueness (individuality) while staying relevant to global trends (conformity). Consumer satisfaction stems not only from owning branded items at affordable prices but also from the emotional experience of "the thrill of the hunt," which provides a sense of pride and inner happiness.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has influenced the communication patterns and lifestyles of university students, notably through the phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)—an anxiety triggered by the fear of missing out on information or trends on social media. This study aims to understand how Gen Z students at the Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Padang Panjang confront the influence of social media and adapt to FOMO amidst Minangkabau cultural values. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with digital ethnography methods, utilizing in-depth interviews, social media observations (Instagram and TikTok), and visual curation of the informants' content. Analysis was conducted using the concept of FOMO by Andrew K. Przybylski et al. and the Theory of Self-Presentation by Erving Goffman. The results indicate that FOMO influences Gen Z students in terms of consumptive behavior on TikTok, self-existence on Instagram, and attachment to online games to maintain social relationships. However, FOMO also yields positive impacts by encouraging Gen Z students to seek inspiration and create artworks that are relevant to contemporary developments. This study concludes that students are able to adapt wisely by exercising self-control, limiting screen time, and filtering digital content to preserve their cultural identity.

Abstract

Hanging out culture is a form of social activity that has developed among university students as part of the urban lifestyle. In a university environment, hanging out activities not only serve as a way to fill free time but also serve as a social space that allows for interaction, information exchange, solidarity building, and the formation of group identity. This study aims to examine the hanging out culture among students in the Television and Film Study Program at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Padangpanjang, class of 2024, and to analyze the role of this activity in the process of student identity formation. The study used qualitative methods with a descriptive approach. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation of TV and Film students from the class of 2024 who actively hang out in the food court of the Faculty of Film and Digital Recording Arts (FFSRD) and the campus grounds. The data obtained were analyzed by identifying interaction patterns, habits, and shared experiences that emerge during these hangouts, then interpreted using Damsar's social space theory. The results indicate that hanging out culture has become an integral part of the social life of TV and Film students at ISI Padangpanjang. This activity not only serves as a means of recreation and release from boredom after lectures, but also serves as a medium for building social relationships, strengthening solidarity, exchanging academic information, and discussing various matters related to the world of film and audiovisual production. Repeated interactions in the hangout space generate a strong sense of togetherness and form a collective identity as "TV Film kids." This study shows that the FFSRD food court and the area around the field function as social spaces that play an important role in the process of student identity formation. Thus, the hangout culture not only has a social function but also contributes to the formation of group identity on campus.

Abstract

This study discusses the changes in cultural identity among the younger generation of the Anak Dalam Tribe in Nalo Tantan District, Merangin Regency. This study aims to determine the forms of cultural identity changes and the factors that influence these changes. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that there has been a change in cultural identity among the younger generation of the Anak Dalam Tribe, which is evident in their dress, language use, social patterns, and the decreasing involvement of the younger generation in traditional activities. These changes are influenced by developments in technology, education, social media, and social relations with outsiders. However, some young people still strive to maintain local culture and participate in traditional activities in the community. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that modernization has influenced the changes in the cultural identity of the younger generation of the Anak Dalam Tribe, so the role of families, traditional leaders, and the community is needed in maintaining local culture so that it can survive amidst the changing times.
