Abstract

The python-piton (mitoni) tradition is a Javanese tradition performed at the seventh month of pregnancy as an expression of gratitude and a prayer for the safety of the mother and unborn child. This tradition is still preserved by Javanese transmigrants in West Pasaman Regency, particularly in Limau Purut Village, Kinali District. This study aims to analyze the process, meaning, and educational values contained within the python-piton tradition. The research method used was qualitative research with a descriptive approach, using data collection techniques such as interviews, observation, documentation, and literature review. The results indicate that the python-piton tradition is carried out through several stages, including the ritual bath (siraman), the changing of seven types of cloth, the splitting of the coconut, and a celebration (selamatan) with the serving of traditional foods such as rujak (rice cake) and dawet (dried fruit). This tradition has undergone several changes in its implementation, but remains preserved by the community as a form of preserving Javanese culture in diaspora areas. Furthermore, the python-piton tradition embodies religious, social, and community values, as well as hopes for the safety of the mother and unborn child. This tradition also reflects the acculturation of Javanese culture with elements of local beliefs and customs.

Abstract

The Minangkabau people are known for their matrilineal kinship system, which regulates social life, including marriage. One customary rule that is still maintained is the prohibition of inter-tribal marriage, because it is considered that kinship ties are still maintained through the maternal line. However, over time, the community began to practice inter-tribal marriages even though they conflict with this customary law. This study uses a qualitative research method with data collection techniques through interviews and observations. Informants in this study consisted of the community and niniak mamak (elderly women) who are familiar with customary marriage rules in Nagari Guguak Nunang. This study aims to determine the form of weakening community compliance with customary law, the factors causing it, and its impact on the community's social life. The results show that the weakening community compliance with customary law is influenced by modernization, developments in education and technology, the influence of migration, the lack of instillation of customary values in the family, and the reduced role of niniak mamak (elderly women) in guiding nieces and nephews. In addition, marriage decisions are currently based more on personal choice than customary considerations. The impacts include the emergence of family conflicts, tension in kinship relations, reduced customary authority, and the erosion of the values of deliberation and togetherness in Minangkabau society.

Abstract

The street culture within the Vespa street community is reflected in the use of vintage Vespas, which function not only as a means of transportation but also as symbols of identity, self-expression, freedom, and solidarity among members. Field observations revealed various types of Vespas, ranging from those that maintain their original classic character to modified versions such as the rat look style, featuring rusty bodywork, high handlebars, and sidecars made from recycled materials. Community gatherings commonly take place in open spaces, where members relax, discuss vehicle conditions, and perform minor repairs together. Interactions among members are informal and friendly, characterized by casual conversations, the exchange of travel experiences, and mutual assistance when mechanical problems occur on the road. This togetherness demonstrates that vintage Vespas serve as a medium for building close social relationships and strengthening collective identity within street culture.
