Abstract

This study aims to synthesize recent literature regarding the psychosocial dynamics and academic impacts of utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as learning media among university students. A thematic literature review was conducted to evaluate the multifaceted effects of digital adoption. A systematic search strategy initially identified 44 articles, which were subsequently filtered through rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria, yielding 19 primary articles for in-depth analysis. Data were analyzed using thematic synthesis, categorizing findings into cognitive performance enhancement, psychological dynamics, and socio-structural barriers. The review reveals that while AI and digital platforms significantly improve conceptual understanding and academic efficiency, their utilization simultaneously induces critical psychological challenges, including digital fatigue and varying degrees of speaking anxiety. Furthermore, heavy reliance on these tools triggers ethical dilemmas, notably academic dishonesty, which is exacerbated by a persistent digital divide and inadequate digital literacy among users. In conclusion, the integration of ICT and AI in higher education operates as a double-edged sword. It necessitates targeted pedagogical interventions and institutional ethical frameworks to mitigate psychological distress and maintain academic integrity while maximizing cognitive benefits

Abstract

This study aims to synthesize literature regarding the utilization, effectiveness, and challenges of integrating information and communication technology, including artificial intelligence, as learning media for university students. This literature review employs a thematic synthesis approach on 8 primary articles rigorously selected from 32 initial records through strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data analysis technique focuses on extracting central themes, identifying inconsistent findings, and mapping research gaps. The analysis reveals a paradoxical pattern in digital media utilization. On one hand, digital platforms and artificial intelligence tools significantly enhance information acquisition efficiency, digital literacy, and students' cognitive outcomes within blended learning ecosystems. Conversely, the rapid adoption of these technologies introduces substantial ethical and operational challenges, such as increased academic misconduct, algorithmic over-reliance, and learning distraction. A prominent research gap exists regarding comprehensive evaluation frameworks that measure the long-term impact of autonomous technology on students' analytical independence. In conclusion, the effectiveness of digital learning media depends not solely on technological infrastructure availability but requires progressive pedagogical designs prioritizing critical digital literacy and academic integrity to optimize the transformative potential in higher education.
