Abstract

Although character education in elementary schools has garnered considerable scholarly attention, studies specifically examining 5S culture (Smile, Greeting, Salutation, Polite, and Courteous) as a systematic character-building strategy remain scarce. This study aims to synthesize findings from prior empirical research on the implementation and outcomes of 5S culture in elementary school settings. A systematic literature review was conducted by analyzing ten peer-reviewed articles published between 2022 and 2026, selected through purposive criteria based on relevance, recency, and methodological rigor. Data were gathered through critical reading, thematic identification, and cross-study comparison. Findings reveal that 5S culture is implemented primarily through daily habituation, teacher modeling, instructional activities, and school-wide programs. Its application yields measurable improvements across three character dimensions: discipline, social competence, and religiosity. Students exhibit greater rule compliance, punctuality, cooperative behavior, tolerance, and engagement in religious routines. Additionally, 5S culture fosters a warmer, more harmonious school climate. Key success factors include teacher exemplary conduct, leadership support, parental involvement, and consistent implementation. This study concludes that 5S culture constitutes an effective character education strategy when applied with commitment and backed by collaborative stakeholder engagement.
