Abstract

Sentence construction ability is one of the fundamental language skills that elementary school students need to master. Initial observations of third-grade students at UPT SD Negeri Kutorejo 3 Tuban revealed that their sentence construction ability was still low, as indicated by only about 40% of students being able to arrange sentences correctly. This study aimed to improve students’ sentence construction ability through the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which was conducted in two cycles. The participants were 20 third-grade students. Data were collected through tests, observations, and documentation, and were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results showed that the implementation of the PBL model improved students’ sentence construction ability. Learning mastery increased from 55% in Cycle I with an average score of 73.85 to 85% in Cycle II with an average score of 84.15. In addition, both teacher and student activities improved from the good category to the very good category. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model is effective in improving the sentence construction ability of third-grade students at UPT SD Negeri Kutorejo 3 Tuban.
