Abstract

Studies on tracing connections between traditional education systems across different parts of the medieval Muslim world not only contribute to our understanding of Islamic educational history but also provide insights into the development of cultural identity and transmission of religious knowledge in diverse Muslim communities. This study examines the historical connections between the Othupalli educational system in Malabar, India, and the broader Kuttab system of the medieval Muslim world, addressing a significant gap in the academic research. Using a qualitative approach based on a comprehensive literature review, this study provides a comparative analysis of the historical development, organizational structures, and educational methodologies of these systems. The study reveals significant parallels, including their setup as single-teacher institutions focused on Quranic recitation and basic Islamic teachings, while highlighting the unique adaptations of the Othupalli system, such as the use of Arabi-Malayalam. Notably, this study uncovers the overlooked role of women as educators in the Othupalli system. Both systems face challenges in standardization, curriculum development, and quality control. This comparative analysis contributes to our understanding of how Islamic educational traditions have been preserved and adapted across different cultural contexts. These findings have implications for understanding historical Islamic education practices and their potential relevance to contemporary educational challenges in Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study investigates the commentarial, glossarial, and marginalia traditions on Alfiyyah Ibn Malik within the Malabar region, emphasizing its role in the curriculum, pedagogy, and intellectual heritage of Arabic grammar education. Recognizing Alfiyyah as a foundational didactic poem widely used for teaching Nahw (Syntax) and Sarf (Morphology), the research addresses the gap in documenting Malabar Ulama’s scholarly contributions, which have been fragmented and underrepresented. Employing qualitative content analysis of primary texts, including commentaries, glosses, and marginalia by Malabar scholars, supplemented by expert interviews, the study explores how these works facilitate the teaching and memorization of Arabic grammar in Pallidars, Islamic colleges, and universities. Findings reveal that the Alfiyya’s versified structure and comprehensive coverage, combined with localized pedagogical adaptations, have sustained its academic authority and pedagogical relevance in Malabar. The extensive scholarly engagement demonstrates a dynamic interaction between global classical knowledge and local intellectual traditions. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of knowledge transmission in Islamic education and highlights Malabar’s unique role in preserving and innovating Arabic linguistic sciences, thereby enriching both regional and global academic landscapes.

Abstract

This Study examines the role of the Post Graduate Department of Islamic Studies at the SAFI Institute of Advanced Study (SIAS), Vazhayur, Kerala, India, in fostering a research ecosystem through an analysis of over 120 publications produced between 2021 and 2025. Addressing the challenge of cultivating a research culture in underdeveloped regions, this study highlights how the Department integrates traditional Islamic scholarship with contemporary interdisciplinary approaches across ten thematic areas, including COVID 19 impacts, education, gender, social issues, politics, economics, Malabar history, food culture, and religion. Employing qualitative analysis, the research categorizes publications by theme, emphasizing the active involvement of PG students and faculty members in research activities. The department’s curriculum, mentorship, financial incentives from the Institute, and collaborative networks contribute significantly to sustained scholarly productivity and academic growth. The findings demonstrate the department’s responsiveness to local and global challenges while promoting critical thinking and capacity building among students. This comprehensive thematic mapping offers valuable insights into institutional research strategies and underscores the importance of academic ecosystems in advancing regional scholarship and interdisciplinary scientific discourse in developing countries, such as India.
