Abstract

This article presents various aspects of knowledge about interperpretation of Qur’an, starting from definition, basic principles, epistemology, history of development, and application maqâshidî interpretation to verse of the Qur'an Surah An-Nisâ’[4]:60 about taghut. Analysis to interpret the verse in relation to maqâshidî interpretation is by using analysis maqâshid al-syarîah about the five basic principles in religion, namely maintaining religion (hifz ad-dîn), guard the soul (hifz an-nafs), guard the treasure (hifz al-mâl), guard the honor (hifz al-‘irdh), and guard descendants (hifz nashl). maqâshidî interpretation relevance becomes an analytical tool in understanding the verses of the Qur'an, so that there is a balance between the meaning of the text and the use of context.

Abstract

The development of digital media has significantly transformed the patterns of Qur’anic interpretation, including on the issue of nationalism in Islam. This study analyzes how verses related to nationalism are interpreted by two online media platforms: Detik.com and NU Online. Using a qualitative method with content analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis approaches, Detik.com interprets Q.S. Al-Isrā’ [17]: 70 as a foundation for freedom and human dignity, although academic tafsir traditionally views this verse as referring to the general honor bestowed upon humankind. The platform also uses Q.S. Al-Mumtaḥanah [60]: 8 to equate love for the homeland with defending religion, despite the verse’s original context focusing more on social relations and tolerance. Meanwhile, NU Online references Q.S. Al-Qaṣaṣ [28]: 85 as theological legitimacy for love of one's homeland, although it primarily refers to Allah’s promise to the Prophet Muhammad regarding his return to Mecca. Likewise, Q.S. An-Nisā’ [4]: 66 is interpreted as evidence of the significance of one’s birthplace, even though the verse contextually concerns the command to emigrate as a test of faith. The findings reveal that while these interpretations aim to contextualize nationalism within Islam, there is a tendency toward distortion due to selective verse usage and deviations from established academic tafsir methodology. It is crucial to apply sound and objective interpretive methods that go beyond pragmatic interests and remain academically accountable. This ensures that interpretations of nationalism-related verses in Islam reflect the Qur’an’s teachings in a comprehensive, logical manner, avoiding narrow ideological biases that risk diminishing the depth of the sacred text.

Abstract

Al-Quran is a revelation that explains all problems. This includes the issue of leadership (khil?fah). Regardless of the form of the khil?fah in the Koran, it is certain that there is no doubt that the khil?fah was the spotlight of the divine kalam. Because any problem must be mentioned in the Koran. However, what if the interpretation of the verse is diverted to something that does not mean the verse itself? Through the approach to content and context analysis, in the Daulah Islamiyyah book found verses of the Koran which were interpreted by jumping conclusions, such as QS. Al-M?'idah [5]: 48 and QS. Al-M?'idah [5]: 49. These verses clearly do not discuss khil?fah, but are interpreted by Taqiyuddin an-Nabhani to come to the conclusion as obligatory to establish an Islamic State institution (khil?fah isl?miyyah). Such interpretation is far from what the verse wants to say, even worth politicizing the verses of the Koran.

Abstract

Jami 'al-Bayan is a fanciful commentary among the scholars of the Qur'an. This commentary was composed by early-century commentators on the map of Qur'anic interpretation. Although this commentary has been widely studied, there are still many unknowns in it, especially with regard to this type of interpretation and the method used in its writing. This paper will explore the discussion of Jami 'al-Bayan's commentary, especially highlighting what exactly is the pattern and method. In this paper it is found that the style used in the Tabari is riwa'i, this can be proven when he interprets every verse never separated from the history of the prophet, even with its diversity. The method used in the commentary is al-Quran bi al-Quran and bi ar-riwayah.

Abstract

Polygamy is one of the central themes in Islamic studies that has continuously sparked debate, both within the realm of Qur’anic exegesis and in social discourse. In classical tafsir tradition, polygamy is understood as a permissible practice regulated by the Sharia, with justice as its primary condition. However, historical realities and social practices often reveal that such justice is difficult to achieve, thus generating social, psychological, and gender-related problems. The development of modern thought has introduced new perspectives in understanding polygamy. Some contemporary exegetes emphasize maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah to reinterpret Qur’anic verses on polygamy in accordance with the principle of substantive justice. This research focuses on the analysis of Muhammad Shahrur’s progressive exegesis, a modern Muslim thinker who offers a contextual approach to the Qur’anic text. Through a library research method, this study examines Shahrur’s works and compares them with classical interpretations. The findings indicate that Shahrur views polygamy as a form of dispensational ruling that is emergency-based and contextual, rather than a universally applicable norm. Thus, polygamy is positioned as a situational solution limited to specific conditions, not as a recommended rule. These findings highlight that progressive exegesis provides a more responsive interpretive framework to address contemporary issues such as gender equality and human rights. This research also opens critical discussions on the relevance of polygamy in modern society, while emphasizing the importance of Qur’anic interpretation that is contextual, inclusive, and grounded in justice.
